I failed the 6th grade in public school. Rather than go to summer school or repeat the year where people would know me, I reluctantly let my parents send me to Fork Union. That was the start of a 7 year journey. Repeating 6th grade there I was amazed to find I was on the Headmasters list (a step below Deans List). The military structure and one-subject plan were what I neede. Oh sure, I was not the best student to start, however I learned that every action has consequences and I quickly adjusted. I graduated in 1969 and mention that because although the school has physically changed over the years. their attitude and teaching remains at the forfront. Many famous people have been students and point to Fork Union as having made all the difference. Although I was not very interested in sports at the time, I now wish I had participated. However I did join many of the hobby and activities over my time there. Fork Union is not for everyone, but it certainly was for me. I count many of the teachers and administrators as friends and mentors. I still communicate with fellow students from my classes over 50 years ago. That says something about how the school was a large part of my life.

Surprised at the negatives reviews I read. It is clear in these posts that the parent(s) did not do their due diligence and thoroughly research the school. That falls on the parent(s), not FUMA.

This school is poorly run and the staff don't care about the young men who are having a hard time transitioning. Not only do they expel students, they also continue to charge parents tuition after the child leaves. They also have a major drug issue. My son witnessed drug use, racism civil rights violations and bullying first hand. Look up the word "fumatize." It's basically accepted sodomy of the cadets and the staff is well aware. Suspension is the culture there. They also recently (Fall 2022) had a staff member selling drugs to cadets and then suspended cadets for failing drug tests.

Went to the school back in 2009-2011 To be honest I've seen both positive and negative views posted and all due respect everyone is entitled to their own Outlook and opinion but for what the school did for me it was the best school I have ever attended. There was group of dedicated faculty that will believe in you and push you to your highest potential, I did not get that back in public high school in my inner city, sure FUMA had it's bittersweet moments but I'm not locked up or in a casket thanks to them it gave me guidance in certain areas of my life that will carry for a lifetime, ......... Glad I made a decision to go here

FUMA is one of the finest Christian based prep schools in the nation. Building boys into strong and confident men is their mission. They do it well!

Fork Union changed my life for the better by teaching me how to discipline myself and how to focus on accomplishing my academic goals. I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to attend Fork Union. It wasn't easy to adjust from the public school system to a more regimented daily schedule, but I did adjust and I'm better off for it. I also credit my academic success in college to Fork Union. They really changed my life's trajectory and I'll always be thankful.

If I could give a 0 for a review I would. We sent our son to Fork Union Post Grad Football program. What a waste of $21,000k -$5k credit. Our son suffered his senior year. He had 2.6 grade point average. Our goal for sending our son to FUPG program was to allow him to get more film, use FUPG recruiting contacts and raise his grade point average. Coach Arritt promises they will develop the whole man. Emotionally, spiritually, academically and in Football. Increasing the grade point average is a joke, it's gimme A. Spiritually your son will gain more watching Joel Osteen. My son did thrive in the military environment but don't let that fool you into thinking kids aren't getting phones inside, and they are able to watch unlimited streaming of movies on their computers. Now for Football. ALL of the coaches act as if they are there just to collect a paycheck. They do nothing to develop the players or motivate them. One of the coaches even had a domestic dispute and charges were filed. The coaches are there to WIN, because it will look better on their resume to say they had 2 undefeated seasons. The coaches are not there to develop players. If your son is not getting playing time in high school he will not get playing time at FUPG Football. They will take a team of 30-40 kids and only play their top 22 players. Basically they take kids into the program knowing they are not good enough to be starters and use your $$$ to help fund their program. Now the PRESIDENT of the Fork Union. Never have a I met a more unprofessional, egotistical or argumentative person in my life. When my husband and I tried to discuss the lack of playing time for our son and other players the President went on to get defensive and started asking irrelevant questions like - What was our son's grade point average and even went as far to say that my son probably wasn't good enough to be a starter on the team! But yet, they take your money! My husband was a college football player, did assisted college coaching and has coached recreational leagues for our sons. He knows how to motivate and build skills in players. Instead of listening to why it's important to play all of the kids and NOT worry about getting the WIN the PRESIDENT became so defensive he started asking my husband about his college playing record and his record as a coach! As if what his record was 30 years ago or 7 years ago! He should have listened to parents who weren't happy about the lack of playing time for our son. By the way there were kids on the team that never even took a snap. We drove 3 hours to watch our son get a few snaps on a few games. All the coaches care about is their paychecks and getting the win because that helps them when people look at their resume. None of the kids in the football program enjoyed being at Fork Union. My son went to the recruiting event on the last day of the program and did get 4 coaches ask him to come to see their universities. So they had recruiters there, but my son is 6'5'' - his size alone gets him noticed. If you are hoping that FUPG Football is going to develop your player - they won't. Oh BTW the food stinks too, and the football players don't get more to help sustain the workouts they do all day. Save your MONEY. AVOID this program. The coaching team is not good and the President is the worst representative of this academy. He is a disgrace as a leader and a professional. He should be fired for the way he conducted himself. Good luck parents and I hope your son finds a school he can play for!

It’s fantastic, and great experience to grow young boys into men.

I was extremely dissatisfied in the meager gun use on campus. In my sons entire time there, ONLY 3 people were shot and killed, and ONLY a few dozen were whipped. I demand a clear response, explaining this terrible behavior. This is undeniably a clear example of failed leadership. Our country’s founders would be turning in their graves if they saw this sorry excuse for a school.

This school creates men. Single best decision ive ever made was sending my 16yr old son to this school. He has changed completely. Goal orientated, independent, motivated, has established comrodery. To all the moms out there, this school will help you develop your son into the man you want him to be. I know its hard choosing to send you child away...but it will payoff in the long run....he will make you proud. I have nothing but praise for this school. Dont let the cost scare you way, the admin department can help you find away to pay...it will be your best investment EVER!!!

It is my son second year at FUMA. He came in as a boy and they turned him into a real man. They value him and trust his potential. He got increasing responsibilities and is now a leader. He made honor roll twice. This is a boy who was in public school playing video games all the time. At Fuma he is focused on activities, courses and sports. I am really a happy mom

In a nutshell: If your free-range boy is ranging a little too far, or if he can’t put the phone down, or if you want to make sure he gets into a good college AND becomes a Man, send him to Fork Union. We sent our son to Fork Union in the Fall of 2020 following one disastrous (Freshman) year of public schooling in Marin County, CA that included the COVID-19 Flu shutdowns & “remote learning”. We had grown accustomed to private Catholic Schools and it was a rude awakening both socially and academically. So we looked in great detail at seventeen different boarding schools across the country. We applied and were accepted to five schools including St. Johns NW, Culver, New York MA, Marine MA and Fork Union. We interviewed with our two favorites. We selected Fork Union for the Academics/One-Subject Plan, high college acceptance rate, the Cel phone policy, military structure, and student/teacher ratio. The mix of kids, athletics, qualified staff, Christian environment, the remote bucolic setting and beauty of the campus were just icing on the cake. Our first year at FUMA lived up to what we considered to be our very high expectations. Classes were small, the teachers and administration were responsive and totally accessible. Powerschool provided daily updates on classwork and test scores. FUMA “Resource” personalized coaching/instruction provided extra help which our son needed in science and math with close interaction and attention from Resource staff. We get two weekly eMail Newsletters and regular special eMail reminders. Our only criticism was the quality of the food in the dining hall. The lack of off-campus activities and “mixers” with girls that had been advertised (with a caveat due to the Flu) had not come to fruition due to the ridiculous policies of the State of Virginia. Although one generous and kind FUMA Instructor and his wife hosted BBQ’s (at personal cost) at his farm/home on at least two occasions… very nice. Our son did well enough academically (3.1 GPA), participated in the competitive Marksmanship Team and was relatively happy his entire Sophomore year. He also seemed to really like ALL the teachers and staff. His introduction to the daily structure and enforcement by student “officers” was both good and not. He spoke of some bullying going on and the occasional fight but nothing any HS does not experience. And three boys, including one of high rank were summarily expelled for drinking. He had some uncomfortable moments, but his witnessing of this errant behavior was not all together a bad thing. Life is not Romper Room. Our second (Junior) year began with two HUGE positives. The dining hall menu is now top-quality and fabulous (with no added cost) and an “A” in Algebra 2. And now in his Second Term, he is doing “A” work in Chemistry. RESULTS. But of course, we miss him so very much.We just returned from Virginia and the FUMA Parent’s Weekend & BBQ which was very well done. Parent-teacher conferences were also scheduled. We had an opportunity to personally thank teachers and staff who have made the biggest difference for our son. They were, to a person, kind, intelligent, caring, and generous with their time. We came away without even a shadow of a doubt or shred of regret (except that we so dearly love and miss our son) that Fork Union has been and will continue to be absolutely the best place for our son’s HS education/college prep.
