Sorry for the length, it's not something you can say in one paragraph. I gave it a 3 because the quality of your neighbors will boost your life and it took the 2 to a 3. The best advice I can give you is meet your neighbors quick, invest in some earbuds and make sure you have plenty of money for your utilities! Watch the movie "love, divided" on Netflix! I lived in the second building top floor, big windows and wood floors! It looked so neat! The beauty of the loft becomes a bit harsh when you realize you literally have no privacy in your apartment, my bedroom wall was shared with my cross the hall neighbors bedroom (awkward to hear folks talking in their bed when I was in mine!), my other wall was their living or dining room and the third outer wall was the property managers 2 story office where lots of sawing, drilling and sanding occurs. it really was like living at home again. Some of us joked about hanging up a schedule in the foyer for "personal time". My living room wall by the door was shared with next door and we could hear each other as well.
The cool windows leak and in the winter expect well over $175/month for electric. Mine ran $180 and the heat was 62 at night and 68 during the day. In the summer the loft gets to over 80 with the morning sun and at times wouldn't cool down until lunch.
There wasn't much maintenance on the outside (painting/yard work) and the inside I had several issues that were either never fixed before I left (in a year) or took quite a while to fix (roof leak for a year and sewer gas for 3 weeks). There isn't a lot of privacy on the outside either, with the windows being what they are, neighbors can hear you on the patio and there seems to be areas where conversations are overheard through cameras or speakers.
I tried hard to keep my noise to a minimum throughout the evening and weekends, when you meet your neighbors and get a chance to talk it helps to understand what can and can't be heard. It really negates some of the bad feelings that can develop in situations like this. While most of the second building is this way, the first building may not have the sound issues we do
There is the upside! The area is great to walk and walk downtown or to the Mexican restaurant, the car detailer at the top of Spring St is awesome (drop off the car and walk home) and the community there is nice and quiet.

I ended finding this apartment for my son who was moving from Colorado, it was perfect for him, single guy with a cat. But then ended up staying there for awhile due to unforseen circumstances and it only being a 1 bed 1 bath it was a challenge, but we made it work with the living room being my room. The one compliant I had is the windows. They are old and had major cracks between where they shut. First electric bill he got was $200.00 for 1 bedroom apartment, crazy. We kept the heat at 64 and had to put plastic on the windows and foam in the cracks. It did help, but not the best decorating accessory. We made it work until I was able to buy a house. I did love the walking path and convenient to restaurants.

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience living at CulpeperLofts. Edwin and Chris have such amazing hearts and they truly care about their tenants. They are always there for you no-matter the day or time. I highly recommend Culpeper Lofts for anyone who is looking for a wonderful place to call home!

HORRIBLE experience with the Lofts management! A family member signed a rental agreement and gave $1,000 deposit. The family member felt pressured to sign the agreement and decided the next day to cancel the rental agreement. They are refusing to give back the family member's money (which is illegal to do in the State of Virginia). The representative said this is not the first person they have refused to give their money back to. Now we have to get lawyers involved to recoup money. I highly recommend avoiding the Lofts!

Very beautiful apartments at a very good price and the best of all, their finishes, preserving the historical value that is priceless.
