Ok, so this place drips with nostalgia for me. I grew up in a rural mountain town where a roadside gas + market + hardware + feed + grocery + ice cream store served as the local equivalent of a town square. The old store is long gone now but Smith Grocery feels so similar even though it's 40 years and 200 miles away.
My favorite part by far: needed a copper fitting, was resigned to an hour (or more) drive to find one, and needed to stop for gas. Decided to walk through the door to the hardware wing, and lo there it was: copper plumbing. Terry walked through the door a couple minutes later, asked me if I needed help, and proceeded to test the fitting I'd grabbed on a 3/4 pipe and make sure I knew the tape-and-goop trick to bind the threads.
Fast forward about an hour and there's no leak on that copper pipe anymore. I predict many Smith Grocery visits in my future.

Great pit stop. Clean restrooms. Fuel up, grab a beverage/snack and a jar of local honey or preserves. 2 thumbs up!

This is THE place to get gas, some groceries, and hardware. In fact, it may the ONLY place to get these items in Copper Hill! They also sell Hunt Brothers Pizza. We stopped only to get gas. The price was good ($3.66/gallon in mid-Sept, 2023) wherein the gas stations that we passed a few miles away were higher at $3.89/gallon. An hour south on I-81 was $3.55 at a Love's station. The pumps were "old-school", and we needed to go inside to pay. They were out of 87 octane but had other choices.

REAL FOOD!! Very good fresh local selection of produce, meats and more. It's affordable and tastes good I wouldn't be surprised if it's organic... at lower than box store prices this is my first stop for all staple items in the kitchen, Thank you for keeping the community healthy and happy! Always a good sign when you see very elderly people buying it and walking around with no problems.. the bent mountain chicken is the best I've ever had.
