We had a great stay at the Refuge Inn in August 2024! The inn is an older, quaint property that has been thoughtfully updated and is well-maintained. Our room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The staff were all very kind and helpful!
We really enjoyed the pool, which is warm and large enough for several groups to enjoy. It is partially shaded and surrounded by beautiful landscaping. We also liked being able to interact with the ponies that live at the inn; the bike shop sells food for them if you want to feed them.
The property is in a great location, just across the bridge from the Chincoteague National Wildlife Reserve, making it an easy walk, bike ride, or drive to get across to see the wild ponies and visit the beach. There are several restaurants and shops in walking distance too.
A couple of things to be aware of - if you have any difficulty with stairs be sure to ask for a first floor room when you book, there are no elevators. Additionally, pack your bug spray as the whole area has lots of mosquitoes, gnats, deer flies, and horse flies - they are well controlled around the hotel buildings and pool, but if you venture past the parking lot or want to go anywhere but the beach on the wildlife reserve you definitely need some bug repellent!

Absolutely a great place to stay. The staff was wonderful, the room were well cared for, comfortable and the service was second to none. It is conveniently located so you can get any where you like easily. Highly recommend!!!

Loved everything about this family owned Hotel! Clean, clean, clean with a great breakfast, lovely front desk and rooms fantastic!! I will never stay anywhere else when on Chincoteague!! Fresh coffee, great mattresses, ponies on site., homemade breakfast items wow!!!

Great location. Good for families. The floors in the room left your feet black so we went out and bought flip flops so as to not get our beds/feet dirty. Gross. Coffee is delicious but not available till at least 7am. For us early risers it was torture having to wait 2 hours every morning for coffee on vacation. Breakfast brought to your door but sandwiches were frozen/microwaved. Yogurt was tiny and not a healthy brand. "Baked good" choice was a cookie. We were hoping for a muffin or danish as cookies are a dessert, not breakfast item. Not a full breakfast and limited choices w same choices everyday. Air conditioner was super loud and beds weren't that comfy. Pool was lovely as were staff. Overall an ok spot. Kind of regretting not spending a little extra to stay at the Hampton.

Has to be the best inn in town. Close to the beach, resturants and fun. Horses on site with a really nice shaded pool. Friendly service and clean rooms.

The Refuge Inn is a GEM! Our room was very nicely appointed with high-quality linens, a plush carpet, tiles near the door and sliding door for the balcony, and great AC and dehumidifier to cope with the summer heat and humidity. EVERYTHING at the hotel is very clean and well-cared for. The staff are incredibly helpful, breakfast is delivered right to your door per your request filled out in the evening, and the grounds are beautiful. Plus, it is only a few yards away from the land-bridge to Assateague Island, making its location perfect. We will definitely be back!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Refuge inn. A picturesque hotel with the most caring staff. The breakfast delivery, pool and the ponies outside the hotel were some of our favorite amenities. We will be back for sure.

Great place to stay. Clean rooms, very accessible to many attractions. Walking distance to many eateries. A lot of activities to include the pool, and horses out back. The kids loved it.
Rooms: Rooms are clean and neat, breakfast is included.
Walkability: Bike rental place on premises; food 5 min walk.

This is our second visit to the islands and we stayed here both times. Friendly staff, nice comfortable rooms and beautiful grounds. The ponies are a huge draw.
