I had an appointment with Dr. Brockmeier last month where I had discussed with him that I was experiencing complications - pain as well as patellar maltracking - after I had a knee surgery done elsewhere in 2019(by a surgeon he knows, the surgeon referred me to Dr. Brockmeier after being made aware of the fact that he may have made a surgical error). At the start of the appointment my concerns were acknowledged, Dr. Brockmeier was kind, he also looked over an MRI of the surgery site finding two things that were missed by other specialists I had seen before him about the symptoms I had. I'm grateful that he was thorough, found the issues then showed them to me on the MRI. He told me that one of the issues was an uneven trochlear groove which could be fixed surgically but that he didn't specialize in the surgery, he explained that he would need to consult with Dr. Dudich who had experience performing the operation I would need. He included that Dr. Dudich is ranked highly among other surgeons. Dr. Dudich came into the examination room with Dr. Brockmeier & his PA, manipulated my patella without asking me to stand so that he could take note of the difference, then told me I didn't need the surgery. I asked him if he looked at the MRI that showed I would need a surgical correction & he said, "I saw the MRI, the trochlear groove is straight. I'm not going to do the surgery. You have three doctors here telling you that you don't need the surgery", even though Dr. Brockmeier had seen & said otherwise & Dr. Brockmeier's PA who was one of the three "doctors" in the room said nothing. The amount of time between Dr. Brockmeier walking out & coming back with Dr. Dudich would not have been enough time to examine the MRI thoroughly. At that point I felt humiliated & was in tears. The PA left the room & shortly after him Dr. Dudich left the room, then Dr. Brockmeier seemed to backpedal regarding what he saw on the MRI, he then recommended physical therapy & ordered an MRI on my right knee which subluxes. He then told me, "I'm sorry but we can't fix your hypermobility." My hypermobility wasn't a concern I came in with, a structural issue as well as pain was why I made an appointment. I have never been treated this way in any medical setting, I was horrified & I do not recommend these doctors at UVA Sports Medicine.

Dr Gwathmey is the best. Hip injuries aren’t nearly as heard of as things like shoulders and knees. He helped me figure out why I was in pain and repaired my hip great. Very friendly staff easy to talk to and they really listen to you and make you feel heard.

I had an amazing experience with UVA Sports Medicine. I was not passed to a “cocky” PA like I have experienced at other offices. My first visit was with the doctor. I felt like my voice was heard when talking about my pain and I was believed when I explained the steps I personally took to attempt heal myself before I went to see the doctor. Which made me feel like my time was not wasted. The entire team, both Sports Medicine and Outpatient Surgery at the Battle Building, was phenomenal and I received quality and compassionate care. Thank you for everything and helping me feel stronger!

Large parking lot that is free to park. Wheelchairs are available if you need one. Friendly and helpful staff. Check in and imaging are separated in two buildings. Check in at 545 building but imaging is in 515. It is less walking to enter 515 and turn right to check in versus walking through 545 first. Service was quick.

Overall: Fail. Surgeon was great, Anesthesia team were clowns as was the office staff. Following development of a serious complication, I presented myself to the front desk staff asking for help - only to be turned away and told I needed to call the nurse line - Twice! Nurse failed to return two follow-up calls. Their negligence delayed diagnosis by two weeks - and caused significant pain. The only saving grace was the PA Michelle Post, who was the only one who seemed genuinely interested in my care.
