I feel like I'm in a dysfunctional relationship with Lidl. They need customers, although the staff tend to act like they are a nuisance. I need food I can afford, and Lidl is one close-by place to get it. So we deal with each other, but neither of us seems particularly happy about it.
If you're used to big chain grocery stores like Giant and Kroger, Lidl will have a different feel. It sells mostly it's own generic products, with a quirky selection of name brands. Do not go, for example, expecting the entire run of General Mills cereals, or whatever. It also sells random clothes, tools, and housewares at steep discounts, with the selection of these things constantly changing. You have to bring your own grocery bags, buy theirs, or use the random boxes that tend to accumulate on the shelves or floor. That's all fine, as far as it goes.
Lidl brands run from adequate to subpar. Nothing is great. Some things are awful. I've never liked any of their meats, and the chicken is terrible. The cheese is bad, too: bland and rubbery. I've also had bad luck with the milk and eggs. They milk in particular will sometimes spoil even before its "sell-by" date. The produce is okay, though (aside from the brutalized bananas). And the dry and canned goods are passable.
I've shopped at several Lidls, and they have all been marked by grouchy, standoffish, unhelpful staff. That's not always the case. Some people are notably nice, and you appreciate them all the more for having to deal with their gloomy colleagues. But, as Trader Joe's demonstrates, it is possible in the grocery business to hire consistently friendly and helpful people who don't seem to mind interacting with the customers. Lidl is a German company, though, so maybe it's more authentically Teutonic to treat people rudely. Also, usually only about 2 of at least 6 checkout lanes are open, so understaffing might be contributing to the low morale.
What Lidl really has going for it is price. I estimate it's at least 25% cheaper overall than the big chains. They also run some good specials. You have to use an app, though, to get the best deals.
Maybe some day my ship will come in or the economy will improve, and Lidl and I can go our separate ways. Until then, we'll stick together for the kids, who after all need to eat.

I love this Lidil. It’s always clean and stocked. The check out seems to move quickly as well since there are always a lot of people in line.

Very nice market with lots of fresh products and a large selection of freshly baked German pastries, just like at home in Bavaria.

I wanted to love it, it's so conveniently located, and every checkout there are problems they can't/won't fix. Items regularly get double scanned, you have to wait for a manager to fix it and lose the rewards that made it a good value in the first place. Things don't scan for their advertise prices. Rewards in the app regularly do not come off and they cannot explain why or fix it. Advertised items that are on the shelves won't ring up and they won't sell them even if you can show them their own ad. You cannot walk into this store and be confident what you'll be charged, or if you'll pay for things twice, its unacceptable and it has been every time I've gone.

Update: other than for a few items, prices are really no better than at the local Giant with less selection. Meat is more expensive.

I had a very disappointing and frustrating experience at the store. It's unacceptable to be treated with condescension and disrespect by staff (white male, long brown hair), and it's even more concerning that the manager didn't take any responsibility for the situation. The fact that the staff member was condescending and unprofessional is a big issue. As a customer, I have a right to be treated with respect and courtesy, and it's not okay for staff to talk down to me or make me feel belittled. It's also concerning that the female staff member seemed to be implying that the store's policies are more important than customer service. It's not fair to customers to be treated as an inconvenience or an obstacle to be overcome, rather than as valued customers who deserve to be treated with respect and care. The fact that the manager didn't take any accountability for his staff's behavior is also a major issue. As a manager, it's their responsibility to ensure that their staff is providing good customer service and treating customers with respect. It's unacceptable that they didn't take any action or apologize for the situation. There has to be a pattern of poor customer service and unprofessional behavior at this store, which is something that the manager should be taking seriously.

Terrible customer service. Always check your receipt before you leave the store. They usually overcharge products and don’t apply their coupons.

I don't think I have ever smelled a store stinkier than a Magruder's. Those long time area Northern Virginians know what I'm talking about. What a filthy, dirty, nasty, disgusting store. Someone tell me what the appeal is here? It's like an Aldi, with a bakery. A bakery with very little selection.

Today I spoke with the manager, and the white man answered quickly "I don't know what you're talking about." This word is typical for them, they want you stop. or when they tell you "I don't understand what you say." They know what you saying, they don't want to listen to you, they dont like what you are talking.
A young man Cashier employee. I saw him at the hallway made a gesture with his hands "like a telephone," and put it his hand close to the ear, meaning: "call, call."
Asian woman was at front of this young man employee.
Not wonder they know where I was shopping, because every store call them!. Even when I woke up Saturday early and I drove to Walmart Chantilly, the was there.
The WHITE Store Manager knows what I am talking about. He is avoiding the conversation.
At the other store in Springfield, a man gave the employee a note at the hallway. I saw her face surprised, and tense body language. I imagine they told her something bad. A man said loud "who the skinny?". I was skinny. I believe and has to be something big to make people cooperate with you. It's not ETHIC every time the store give to them my information.
Walmart Chantilly, I arrived at 9am and in 40 minutes later they were there. The self-checkout woman was upset, angry looking at me. Scare me. Something wasn't right. The Indian employees from Walmart began to arrive at the checkout, but looking at me. That was when I called the Corporate. Everything changed. I also spoke in person at the other store Lidl in Springfield, and they change too. I Speak with Kolhs manager and everything changed.
I am going to talk to the Home Depot Corporate, and HomeGoods too. If two police from Fairfax "both familly member from my employer" make a Defamation againts me, I dont play. I report them with Department of Justice. You can't telling them "oh she is here" because when I leave the store they want to crash my car outside. Conflict of interest is when YOU are not respecting the Store policy Issues from outside is not your business.
This pictures was a Towing Platfrom intentional making a accident.

It is cheap and that’s the only thing that’s good. They are usually poorly stocked and are just plain rude and mean to the customers, including the manager and the cashiers. Often the isles are blocked and you can’t get around.
