I made an account with NavyFed several days ago because I've been wanting to transition from my primary bank corp to a credit union.
I applied for their auto loan on line. Started doing the application, after inputting personal information it showed me loan amounts and interest rates. The interest rates were about 1-1.5% higher than I was expecting. So I stopped the process and called Navy Fed the next day. The online operator was not able to explain anything to me on the rates or amount other than I'd have to finish the application. The day after that I went into my closest branch to try and see what can I do to get a better loan rate. Do I need a different account, set up direct deposit, put down a higher payment, borrow less, trade in my vehicle? Like I asked them what can I do better so I can do business with them. The employee said that they didn't know what went into those invisible caveats of interest rates. I asked them if someone else on site did, and she said no, no one here will know the answers to your questions. I just kind of sat there dumb struck. I told her to close the account, which she did. They didn't attempt to find an alternative method of accomplishing my goals, no manager came by to see the problem or make phone calls. Honestly I felt more like a cog in a machine at NavyFed than I ever had at my primary bank.
My experience at NavyFed was that I was expendable, my business wasn't wanted, and no one working there understood or wanted to understand how their systems worked.
I have spent the last 5 years rebuilding my credit and navigating how to be better financially, and this was a heart crushing experience. It just drove home that none of these institutions care about your goals, plans, well-being, or even want you to succeed.

Its a mixed bag. I opened an account based on some tv ads. The lady gave me credit card options. I chose the 11% card, no bells, no whistles. My credit score is almost 800. The only question was the credit limit. I gave her permission to run my credit and process the application. The good news? 25,000 line of credit. Bad news? A 17.50% rate. A little bait and switch occurred. I get a text from credit karma of a hard credit pull on my account. If i reject the card, the damage is already done. I told the lady to proceed but a real bad taste in my mouth. This is how they treat veterans and their families? Buyer beware for sure...

Have to say the customer service was awesome! Opening an account was easy and I was treated with great respect. Really loved that the manager's office is right up front and not hiding in a corner. They truly demonstrate that their members are the mission. Great job, Navy!

Thishelle has ruined banking for me. She is knowledgeable, personable, and very helpful. My wife and I had an extremely good afternoon with Thishelle while we opened our accounts. Because of her, I have very high expectations going forward and I'm not confident anyone else will be able to live up to her example.

Not transparent about required items to do business with them.
Called to ensure I would still be able to get help in branch even though my wallet got stolen. Was told there will be no problem as I already have an account. Arrive and was essentially told I was lied to. An hour of driving later… nothing accomplished.

Worst customer service ever! It starts with concierge. You walk in, let them know what you need and they decide whether you should be helped or not. After you tell them, what you want, they point at the little QR code to schedule an appointment with a blunt attitude. Lobby was not busy - 1 man was waiting. The pandemic is over and you’re in the customer service industry folks. You’re open M-F 9-5p and should be able to service customers during the week. I can absolutely understand if you need to set up an appointment on Saturday because everyone is off and will bombard you left and right. NFCU is in hot water with the media for cherry picking customers. Make a positive change!

Been NFCU member since ‘77. Gotten great service for loans and credit cards. They’re very aggressive with anti fraud measures.

Honestly, I love NFCU as an online bank, but on the branch level, they are the worst. I hate every time I have to do something at a branch. They take forever and always look understaffed, which is ridiculous. Some of the employees are unprofessional. I try to do everything online because this particular branch and the one in Humble are horrible. Unfortunately, these are the closest to me, so I always try to avoid them at all costs. I hope management does better than have only one teller, one banker, and a clueless, rude front person who won't do anything other than sign you in. I know NFCU can do better. I've been with them for over 15 years, and this is the one thing I dislike.
