Does the weather suck? Yes. Are there lots of fun things to do? No.But, my daughter was born when I was stationed there and the people were like family to us when we felt alone. What should we look for in Wichita Falls/Sheppard AFB? We look to see if we are with good folks, our family is safe and loved, and is God a part of our lives. Wichita Falls is not a Disneyland it's a place to raise your family and pass this part of our lives with great people.

The best dining facility of any AFB, but the training material was a little lacking.

Base is small. Definitely explore the town, there are lots of great restaurants in it.

For the tourist it might seem "pretty cool"..."kinda small"...or "neat", but as someone who works on Sheppard, I can tell you it is absolutely NOT any of those things. For an AETC base that is dedicated to graduating everything from lowly backshop mechanics to training the elite jet fighter pilot, it is poorly maintained. The roads, for starters, are the worst paved surfaces I have ever driven on in the 30 years I have operated a vehicle. Then there's the concrete training ramp that holds all the aircraft that are used for crew chief/avionics training...it is in such poor condition I wonder just how many broken ankles occur during day to day back-and-forth flight marches. Most of the hangars used for training seem to be the original hangars built in the 1940's. Utter garbage. If I were the base commander, I wouldn't dare to bring any DV's to visit otherwise I'd be completely embarrassed to show the what "the most technologically advanced air force in the world" really looks like.

I moved there 1985, my sister worked for ENJJPT! Had a lot of fun, went to college, fell in love, but left a sad mess! Don't think I would ever go back there!

The United States Air Force is a great way to start a career with endless opportunities for advancement. You get healthcare, housing and a chance to go to college, at no cost to you, if you choose to. Leadership can be both good and bad, but the overall experience is amazing for both those enlisted and families. SAFB in Wichita Falls, TX is a great place to raise a family!

Worst base ever! I preferred Keesler over this hot trash when I was in tech school. Glad I’m never coming back here! I feel bad for anyone who gets Sheppard for their duty station.

The man who just visited the base and said the area around the base wasn't very nice....I don't know where he gets his information, but I have lived across from the base for 30 plus years and the area is perfectly nice. Not a lot of businesses, but the neighborhood is actually one of the safest areas in the city.

Studied to be a jet aircraft mechanic in the early 70's. High tech training.

My son recently graduated from Sheppard AFB and I was able to attend the graduation. Everyone on base was friendly and welcoming. My son had a good experience here and it was a good place for him to attend tech training. The city of Wichita Falls I found clean and the people were friendly. The area around the base isn't the nicest, but get away from the base to the downtown area and it's a very nice city.

Can confirm that Lackland is better than this base, I would rather have done BMT over again than come here. I had a three month Tech School, and was supposed to leave at the end of it almost right after. No, I had a three month stay turn into one year because I was forgotten about and treated like I didn't know anything because I was an airmen, that is until a TSgt actually listened and answered my questions. She fixed my orders and had them in the system ready to print in one day, the next day I packed my bags and had a brief, the next I left for home. The MTLs should take no blame, the only program to blame is the EFMP process, I turned in my paperwork the week I got to the base, my wife and I were on it. I heard stories of it taking up to three months, but I was prepared because I was there for that long. First they didn't "label my file" so it sat on their desktop for months, after that it was sent to the base and somehow sent back approved, but they let it sit there for months again. I feel bad for anyone having to go through this process, it needs to be completely revamped with new people entirely.

Although this seems to be an older base, it's clean, well kept and appears to have all the accoutrements anyone could ask for.

I was in the Army and went to AIT for plumbing here. Compared to an Army Post this place is a five star resort. Complete with nice dorms and excellent chow halls. You don’t even have to return your tray. Staff collects it.

Yes it was most definitely better environment than Lackland. Hearing the newest music for first time in months is still very memorable to this day. Every time I hear a Neyo song it reminds me of tech school. Getting back liberties and normalcy was great.
