I just left the shelter, and the staff was extremely rude. The woman at the front desk, seemed to prioritize everyone else while my daughter and I waited without assistance, despite signing in before many other customers. Another patron even asked if we were there to adopt, expressing concern for us. Another staff member, asked a white customer if she had been helped but didn’t acknowledge us at all. It’s disappointing, especially since my daughter and I were eager to volunteer and walk the animals. They missed an opportunity to connect with us, and I’ll be taking my support elsewhere.

They gave me a knowingly injured kitten without telling me. There was a large, obvious gash on her stomach that got infected as soon as I got home. Bringing her to the vet, I had to pay $400 for an injury that wasn’t even MENTIONED to me. Luckily, my baby Custard was okay, and is happy and healthy. Additionally, Staff were rude to me, and pushing me to adopt 2 cats despite my persistence that I couldn’t afford it, and generally being distrusting of me even though I’ve told them i’ve cared for multiple cats before.
I always want to support shelters and think everyone else should to, regardless of my review, but this is ridiculous behavior.
On a positive note, I love Custard more than I have ever loved anything ever.

Great people that help animals in need and the community with fed food if possible.

We adopted our newest best friend on 31 Aug 24 and we just wanted to share what a great experience we had at the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter.
Before our arrival at the shelter, we had filled out the on-line adoption form and had narrowed our list to four dogs.
Upon arrival, we were greeted promptly and warmly. The front desk lady pulled up each of our candidates and provided us staff notes and went to great lengths to match a suitable dog for our family as we have young grandchildren to consider.
She assigned us to a Young Staff Member to show us the dogs in the order of their recommendations. She was professional, compassionate, dedicated and so easy to communicate with. She patiently gave us all the time we needed to make a decision.
It was a pretty easy decision, the #1 recommendation was spot-on.
Since they had our on-line application on file, the finalization of the adoption paper work went super fast and without a hitch.
Since we have had him home, he's adjusting well and there is no doubt that we were blessed to have found him! We took him to our Vet for a routine exam and she was so impressed with the detailed medical records provided by the shelter and how healthy and well cared-for he was during his 4 month stay there.
Make no mistake, this is a very busy and noisy place. No doubt, It takes very special and dedicated people to make it all work, our hats are off to you and we thank you all!
Recommend if your considering adopting a pet there, fill out the on-line application and narrow down your preferences prior to arriving at the shelter.

I pay Hays County taxes. Drove an hour to bring three healthy STRAY juvenile cats (someone dumped in the middle of nowhere) and was turned away. Told-You MUST have an appointment to surrender animals. They need to change their web site to saying MUST make an appointment for ANY services or be turned away :(

Awesome staff! Great people! Got a beautiful cat. The adoption fee was like $20 and they gave us more than $20 in food, treats and medications.

i adopted my dog here, and he’s one of the best things to ever happen to me. however, since having him i’ve kept an eye on the shelters social media pages, and i’m thoroughly unimpressed. the staff is incredibly rude and unprofessional. also make no mistake, this is a kill shelter. and many of the animals are malnourished, and unkept. it took an entire month for me to get my dogs weight up enough to no longer have his ribs visible. they are unwilling to help people that bring in animals from the street. overall unprofessional. i love my dog and im so glad to have him, but i have an immense dislike for this place. hopefully y’all will do better in the future.

I called them to see if they would intake a stray cat and her young kittens and they said that they would take them but it’s a 50/50 chance of them releasing them back in the area??? As if that’s not the problem to begin with?? Absolutely wild of them to do and definitely not a solution.
