Dr. Rafael and his staff have always treated my babies and myself with the utmost care and respect. The staff is so kind and patient and Dr. Rafael is so thorough; it is very obvious that he has found his passion and life’s purpose. He is very kind and compassionate and always willing to educate me on the procedures or medications that my pets are going through/using.
I met the staff back last year when my cockatiel Piki hurt herself in an accident. I was panicked and called around the area crying and seeking emergency help. Dr. Rafael immediately accepted us for an appointment that same hour and was able to examine her and give her a clear bill of health! I was so panicked and Dr. Rafael, Julien, and other staff were so kind and helped calm me down and reassure me, while looking after my girl.
Last February, my ferret Ivan started acting lethargic and I was able to take him in quickly to see Dr. Rafael. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer, and Dr. Rafael was very supportive and went over treatment options with myself and my husband. Just a month later, we brought our sweet Ivan back to Dr. Rafael to euthanize him, and again, in such an extremely stressful time, the staff was able to comfort myself and my husband with the loss of our baby, and even sent us a sympathy card in the mail.
Just recently, Dr. Rafael performed surgery on my Leopard Gecko Mango to remove a sperm plug that was clogged in his vent, which was also very stressful for our family! Once again, Dr. Rafael and his staff were very thorough and kind in not only removing the plug with no issues, but calling me and updating me during the procedure to let me know how he was doing and how everything was progressing. Dr. Rafael also sent us home with antibiotic shots and educated me on how and when to deliver those injections, making sure I felt confident in what I was doing before he sent us home.
I have only used Portland Veterinary Hospital for my exotic pets, but am really considering moving my dogs and cats to the facility as well.
I cannot recommend Portland Veterinary Hospital enough! Thank you so much for saving my babies, maintaining their health, and being so compassionate and professional with your patients and families.

We took my ferret here due to him wheezing, and we were seen very quickly. The staff here is very nice and the vet was extremely thorough, and asked us lots of questions our other vet typically doesn't as well as went over every possible thing it could be. After some xrays we were able to get a cause, and again was very thorough when explaining everything as well as some preventative measures to take. I felt like our concerns were taken seriously, and you could tell they really really cared about my boy. The prices are also extremely affordable. I've never been happier after a vet visit and have complete confidence in the care I got. Overall couldn't recommend this vet more!

I have a lot of cat friends and always recommend this place. These guys have always been extremely accommodating to any emergencies we have had, the prices have never left me upset as I feel they’re reasonable, and the biggest thing aside from the amazing care is their bedside manner. They remember me and my cats personally. That’s big and means a lot.
We recently had to put one of our girls down suddenly due to a diagnosis. The docs and the staff were very gentle and compassionate throughout the whole process. It made it a little easier.
The staff here is phenomenal. I have never once felt uneasy about their care with my cats. They have always been super gentle and extremely kind. Never gotten an ick from anyone here.
I wish all vets could be on this level.

We take our bird, chameleon, cats and dogs here and are beyond pleased with the care of each pet, right up to and including when the time is necessary to put our pet out to greener pastures at the rainbow bridge. We could not be more pleased with the care of our pets and comfort for both at each visit. Their compassion for both pet and parent, is just immeasurable. Though our hearts break in two with some decisions, it's always with our pets best interest at heart and they deliver the necessary info with professional and compassionate care every time. ❤️? I can not express enough gratitude for the exceptional care and compassion provided by Portland Veterinary Hospital during an urgent situation with my puppy Teena. From the moment I called, the staff displayed unwavering kindness and professionalism, squeezing Teena into their schedule for a same-day appointment.
Teena, suffering from a hereditary condition and a weakened immune system, and was bleeding uncontrollably was skin lesions. Originally misdiagnosed by another veterinarian. The sense of panic and desperation I felt was overwhelming. However, the vet/doctor on duty was an absolute godsend.
During our second visit, Tammy took the time to thoroughly explain Teena's condition and treatment plan, ensuring that I was fully informed and involved every step of the way. Her patience and understanding were truly remarkable, easing my worries and instilling confidence that Teena was in the best possible hands.
The genuine care and concern shown by the entire staff at Portland Veterinary Hospital were nothing short of extraordinary. Their willingness to accommodate Teena's urgent needs, even amidst a busy schedule, reaffirmed my belief that they prioritize the well-being of animals above all else.
Thanks to the timely intervention and expert care provided by Portland veterinary hospital. Teena is now on the road to recovery. I am immensely grateful for their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to animals.
