In Sept. 23' I cash purchased a 2015 MB Sprinter 2500 170" 2.1L 4cyl diesel from United Motors - McKinney, TX. I should have caught the vibe that day when I asked if they had the spare tire. They did not and offered me a ramp and 3 stationary shelves in lieu of that. I did not need them but I took them. I hoped to resale them for tires. However it turns out the ramp was broken, the struts were shot and the clasp that keeps it secure when folded was broke. Little did I know this would only be the beginning of my journey. the ramp was sold for scrap metal, the 3 shelves are in my garage.
The real nightmare began as it broke down a couple of days post purchase, after only clocking 40ish miles on the odometer. At this time it had to have $4785 worth of work done to make it driveable (rusted fuel lines, lower fuel pump replacement, various sensors, water in the fuel tank etc..) not to mention the tow fee and loss of time. I had not even filled it with fuel sice leaving United at this point. I drove from Mckinney (United) to Dallas after purchase then broke down in South Dallas enroute to Houston a couple of days later.
I had another sensor replaced since then as well, all is documented in images below.
Now with less than 2000 miles I have put on it, it needs a new turbo. Upon further inspection there is significant rust everywhere, old vehicle wrap and adhesive stuck to the roof, door speakers were dry rotted and blown, rear doors don't line up as latch as the modified striker incorrect and missing the catch piece at the top. Driver side rear panel has been welded on by an amateur, there is a huge gap in driver side rear wheel well (you can see the light through it), water leaks everywhere from the seams to the trim fittings. They put lipstick on a pig to make a sale, so to speak.
This vehicle has turned into an absolute money pit. I could not be more disappointed in my purchase. I will have $30k in it to make it driveable again, This does not include the rust, wrap/adhesive, doors, speakers, broken trim clips, missing electrical grommets, wiper fluid system and other various issues that have come to light. I would have spent 30k -35k and bought a newer model if I had known I would be at that price point regardless. I thought I was getting a good deal, I was not.
Hindsight is 20/20 and I would give them a 0 if possible. Please be wary making a purchase from these guys and take a mechanic with you. I do strongly advise you go elsewhere, due to the lessons I have learned.
I have had the van since September (7 months) and have been able to drive it for approximately 4-6 weeks during that time. It has spent the rest of it's recent life in mechanic shops or in my driveway waiting on mechanic appointments.
I have attached first mechanic bill w/repairs, 2nd mechanic bill and initial purchase. I will add the turbo reciept when I can afford to have it done as well as other issues that arise until it is a usable vehicle or I reach my first 5k of usability. This will keep a public log of the price I paid for doing business with United Motors until dependability is achieved. Who knows what else they/ me will find.
After countless hours of frustration, diagnosis and some repairs I have done myself (speakers, leak sealing, sound dampening) it is currently a $26,000+ yard ornament, disheartening to say the least. BUYER BEWARE!
Update: On 6/26/24 with 176,000 miles (9k since purchase) and all scheduled service done, the engine blew. Softball sized hole in the block from a slung rod. $12k repair via the Mercedes dealership. The dealership said they had never seen anything like that on this engine with that low of mileage. I had stayed on top of all routine scheduled maintenance since the bad gamble. It is now that I concede and send it to the junkyard. My story regarding United Motors ends here. The afternoon staff is amazing but the manager was so unprofessional and aggressive. The whole experience was shady and caused a lot of unnecessary trouble for me so In retrospect I’m glad we didn’t end up purchasing. There are too many lots out there that are better and more honest to waste your time here.
