The VA clinic has come a long way. From the time I arrive to my appointment, to the time I’m back in my car. It takes no more than an hour. Keep up the great work ??

We have always been very pleased with the VA. They treat everyone with respect and dignity. Thank you to everyone who works at the McAllen VA!

Since transferring from VA Hospital Audie L Murphy San Antonio TX. My experience at the McAllen VA clinic has been a overall change in my medical health treatment, scheduling and specialty referrals.
In my opinion San Antonio VA Audie L Murphy is understandably over loaded, over worked and under staffed due to the overwhelming veterans exiting within and around the surrounding San Antonio areas. In Comparison to VA McAllen and surrounding valley coastal areas.
My experience in waiting time for Dr. Appointments and specialty referrals appointments at the VA Audie L Murphy hospital took an average of several months to a year. And the type of treatment I've received when I did get to my appointments was a feeling of a revolving door. A feeling of next, next, next.
I've had lower back pains since exiting my military service and it's always been X-rays and ibuprofen for 30 years. But since I moved to McAllen Tx. My lower back pain was given an actual diagnosis along with not only X-rays but MRI and Ct. Scan reports and from there I was able to finally make a second claim again for lower back pain with positive award claims.

There seems to be a strong disconnect between VA staff and veterans, at this McAllen clinic. Malaise seems very heavy at this one.
Getting meds (life sustaining ones) is like pulling teeth. How many times can you read:"I'll let the doctor know"? Then, absolutely nothing happens- sometimes for weeks. Somebody is dropping the ball... a lot. Prescribing meds shuts the system down? You're a clinic, no?
With VA McAllen, I'm not sure if it's apathy or professional incompetence, or all both. A terrible disservice to vets. Worst VA I've ever been to.
PS: I agree 100% with the person who suggested the McAllen VA is using paid booster/sock-puppets giving 3 or 4 star ratings. (Verbiage too flowery and heavy in mindless praise, with no specifics).

Why have a phone if you're not gonna answer, 4th time calling just to get hung up on. All I'm doing is returning a call about an appointment I need to make. Also waste of time when I say call after 12 y'all feel the need to call at 1150. Phone system is completely outdated, it constantly say thank you for your service and doesn't transfer me to the correct dept.

I am a traveling Vet and this year a Winter Texan. I have to have an EKG and Blood work done every 6 nonths in March and September. This time March fell on McAllen OPC to perform.
From getting an Appointment to getting the EKG and Blood Test done was painless.
Everyone was extremely friendly.

The facilities are new and look nice. Plenty of parking, but didn't see a golf cart driving around to help vets in need. They have a big information area with friendly ladies that are willing to assist anyone coming in. Didn't see a cafe and they had a couple of venders for hats and veterans stuff, but they don't have a room at this clinic. They just have tables in the hallway. My clinic is in ATX, so the only service I got here was my blood work. You sign in. Wait. Get called for blood. Easy peasy. No long wait on a Wednesday morning at least.

01.29.24 Monday morning, no power, all appoints. Canceled. No back up power. No inclement weather either. No solutions available. Unacceptable! facilities should have corrected before opening or been alerted of issue during the weekend. It's a government building. This is what happens when you go with the lowest bidder.

Depending on the care and specialty the rating varies.
Veteran has a prosthetic and the department took 6 months to try to resolve the problem, sent him the wrong product for his amputated leg rather than his actual leg, so totally useless. Then when we tried to have the problem fix again they told us it could take another couple months. My spouse went without mobility aids for 6 months (we got it fixed in CFI San Antonio) or it would of been longer.
For his mental help he got consistent care for counseling

The community care program is horrible. The doctor they referred me to told me on Oct 25, 2023 that I have thirty days to find a new doctor. I went to patient advocate for help and I reached out to the gold team and I still have not been assigned a new doctor. Why should we serve our country and risk our life only to come home to a community like McAllen who does not care about the sacrifices we have made. It is hard to sleep at night knowing that I will not have a doctor in such a serious situation. I pray that God will intervene. I have been harassed by the security officers at the McAllen VA and the last time I went to my appointment the nurse could not perform service. Maybe that should have been discussed prior to me arriving for no reason. I am highly disappointed in the McAllen VA. If they truly cared about the patients we would have access to high quality health care not mediocre treatment from those who see us a less than. Unfortunately these are just call centers who do not understand what our service members have gone through in the battle field. I wish there was some one who cared.
