The Excelsior House Hotel is the oldest, and oldest continuously operated, hotel in Texas. It is a historic hotel with a display of artifacts and information in the lobby, preserving a great deal of historic charm. Rooms are decorated and furnished in period style, offering a historic feel and ambiance. Guests can stay in various historic rooms, some named like the Lady Bird Room or the Diamond Bessie suite, which is the only suite. Rooms are described as very large, clean, comfortable, quiet, and well kept, with comfortable king-sized beds, some with a canopy or four posts. Some rooms include a sun room with a view of the courtyard. Floors can be somewhat uneven due to the age of the building, and some rooms may have a musty smell or less sunlight, though rooms facing the beautiful outdoor courtyard get more light. Bathrooms are modern, private, well equipped, and stocked, with some featuring clawfoot tubs. The hotel has individual and effective air conditioning. The wonderful common areas include a beautiful, relaxing courtyard where guests can unwind; some rooms open to a balcony overlooking it. The location is central, great, and surrounded by historic sites, making it the place to stay in Jefferson. It is within walking distance to most everything, including antique shops, cute boutiques, eateries, and all kinds of restaurants. The staff is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. Parking is directly in front of the hotel. The hotel offers a nice, very good breakfast daily, though it is not included with the room. It is recommended for anyone with a penchant for history or who likes to check items off a bucket list.
Stayed two nights in the Lady Bird Room. Very large room with private bathroom. Our room was clean and quiet. We paid for breakfast one day. It was very good. We love the history of the hotel.
