June 2014 by Lenora Taylor
For a couple of weeks we've been shopping for a refrigerator on Craigslist. We finally found one and contacted the seller. The seller asked us to meet him at a storage unit where he kept it and gave us vague instructions on how to get there. We made plans to meet him on Friday, June 27, 2014 at a business called Highway 79 Self Storage. We arrived at this location but we were unsure it was the correct place because it didn't look like an actual business---- it was huge unpaved lot about only 4 or 5 completed storage units—some incomplete, trucks parked all over the place and a trailer home on the side of the lot. We decided to drive in slowly to see if we could find someone to ask. As we pull in, we see a person sitting in a car with short gray hair so we assumed this might be the seller. As we approached the person in the car, we realized it was an elderly woman in her 80's---we rolled our window down and said, “Hi, we're here to pick up the refrigerator from craigsdlistâ€-- She responded “What?â€, we repeated “we're here to pick up the refrigerator from craigsdlistâ€-- and once again she answered “What??†we went back and forth at least four times and we couldn't get her to understand us. Still not knowing who she was, we decided to drive away and around the property so my friend just told her “never mind†and we slowly drove away. We drove about 50 feet and noticed that the lady accelerated and got next to us and immediately starting screaming at us cursing telling us how dare we tell her “never mind†since she was the owner of this property and we had no business being there, and asked us again what we were doing there?? My friend continued to drive away very slowly looking for a way out since this was quickly escalating. We ended up on the corner of the lot between a trailer home and an old shack. We looked back and saw the lady parked behind us and blocking us so we could move—at this point we started getting scared—we had no idea what was about to happen—we felt that things were quickly getting out of hand. My friend decided to call the seller and asked him to come help us --- he pulled in to the lot in two seconds and quickly drove towards us to assist us. When the lady saw him, she moved – and we were able to get out the area quickly--- in a matter of seconds the woman drove again towards us and started harassing us once again for the third time—she was irate and totally out of control coursing and telling us how she was the owner and how dare we disrespect her by saying “never mind‗at this point I lost it and started cursing back at her--- she demanded we leave her property screaming at the top of her lungs telling us she was calling the police. We left the lot, parked on the road and waited. The seller talked to the lady to try to reason with her—he explained to her that he paid her for storage and had no right treating people like this. She finally drove away and the seller came back to get us--- he apologized and told us it was ok to drive back so we could load the refrigerator. We quickly drove back, loaded the refrigerator and left—but it all times watching our back in case she decided to come back. This was an unnecessary, bizarre, scary situation--- although I'm not a paying customer of Highway 79 Self Storage, this experience was awful! I've never dealt with such an irrational, angry person in my life--- angry at absolutely nothing!! This is a storage unit where people come and go and she feels she's entitled to treat people like this just because she owns this property- I've never been treated like this in my life!! This woman's crazy!!! Think twice before doing business with her. BEWARE of an old woman in a brown Cadillac 109 McNutt Rd, Hutto, TX 78634!!! The name of the road fits her well--- she's a MCNUTT!!!!
