No place for pickup and drop off of taxi/rideshare passengers!
When we arrived on Nov. 1, there was construction on Main St right in front of the only entrance to this historic building. You can enter the hotel on foot, but that block of Main Street is CLOSED to all vehicles.
AFTER you arrive, the staff will tell you that taxi & u-ber can drop you off on Rusk St. at the corner of Main. But that is precisely where two signs say: NO STOPPING ON THE TRAIN TRACKS. The light rail trains run frequently along the right side of Rusk St. So prepare to be mercilessly HONKED at by a loud train horn while you unload your luggage or — heaven forbid — you or a family member has limited mobility. Pull *a little* past the corner and there is a space big enough for one standard-size vehicle or small SUV. But pull too far up and you’ll be a sitting duck for trains running southbound on Main Street.
It all amounts to a significant safety hazard on multiple fronts and results in lots of train horns.
The valet is located on the LEFT side of Rusk Street, closer to the corner of Travis Street than to Main. Dropping of on that side of Rusk makes sense for everyone who can quickly walk across the street to the JW Marriott. But those with limited mobility or wheelchairs beware — this option is very stressful; some might say risky.
Until that construction moves, my recommendation is to direct your driver to park right on the corner of Rusk and Main, carefully tucked in that one space that is clear of both trains.
Safety: See above!

We have stayed at JW Hotels all over the country. At 8:15 tonight, my husband and I called room service to have a bottle of champagne and chocolates delivered for our anniversary. An hour later we got a bottle of red wine delivered. We called down to tell room service they delivered the wrong thing and no one answered. We called for 30 minutes non stop. We even called valet to ask them to have someone call us and called the main number from a cell phone. At any rate, we never heard back from anyone. This is definitely NOT a 5 star hotel by any stretch. We are extremely disappointed and won’t be staying here again!

Today I was assaulted outside the valet at the JW Marriott by a guest leaving in his Toyota Camry. In broad daylight at lunch in front of my colleagues. With a closed sidewalk apparently I, the pedestrian, had the audacity to use the street before he could, and he reacted by gunning his car, nearly hitting my colleague, and jumping out, running at me screaming and shoving me in the chest. When I de-escalated by walking away he ran at me and shoved me from behind, before fleeing the scene. Valet told me to leave because he didn't want a scene (he already had one). Hotel staff inside were rude and unwilling to tell the valet team to share the street with pedestrians. And they refused to call the police on my behalf. Thankful for the construction worker who got it all on video. Lousy staff and a terrible spot on Main St in Houston. Avoid it.

Excellent stay! Room was clean and well appointed! Love the style of the hotel and everyone was very friendly! Excellent staff in the bar, lots of selection. Lots of construction made getting in and out a tad difficult but overall great place!

Didn’t have TV and the front office evening crew on Friday was very rude. Didn’t get TV access until after 3pm Saturday due to the morning crew having their engineer and technicians working on getting the TV’s to work. A lot of construction also was going on which really inconvenienced the hotel guest from getting to and from the hotel. Room was nice.

Rooms and amenities are nice. But reaching customer service after your stay (for a missing receipt for example) is impossible. Called multiple times and never reached a concierge. Plenty of other superior service options in Houston!

We came to the hotel for a quick weekend getaway to celebrate our anniversary. The rooms are wonderful and service was exceptional. Many thanks to Gino at the front desk for making our anniversary extra special.

I recently stayed at the JW Marriott in downtown Houston and had a really good experience overall. This hotel gets a lot right, with just a few small issues that kept it from being perfect.
The location is fantastic - right in the middle of downtown Houston. You can easily walk to many attractions and businesses nearby, which is super convenient. The hotel offers a great range of amenities that cater to both business and leisure travelers.
I was impressed by how clean the rooms were. Everything was well-maintained, just as you'd hope for in a nice hotel. The customer service really stood out too. The staff was excellent and very thoughtful. When they saw my son was with me, they moved us to a higher floor and changed our room from one king bed to two queens without us even asking. That kind of attention really makes a difference.
The room service menu had some tasty options, which was a nice plus. However, this brings me to one of the minor issues: while the food was good, it arrived a bit cold. It's not a huge problem, but it's something you'd expect a high-end hotel to get right.
Another small drawback was a noticeable musty smell in the hotel. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was there. For a hotel like this, it was a bit surprising and could definitely be improved.
One more thing I noticed was the hard water. It wasn't a major issue, but softer water would have been more pleasant for showering and washing up. It's another area where a little improvement could go a long way.
Even with these small hiccups, I really enjoyed my stay at the JW Marriott Houston Downtown. Its great location, nice amenities, and excellent service make it a place I'd consider staying at again when I'm in Houston. If they can address these minor issues, it would easily become one of the top choices for a luxury stay in the area.
Rooms: Comfortable, clean, and well-appointed. Hard water was noticeable, and there was a slight musty smell in the hotel. Overall, rooms felt more 4-star than 5-star, but still impressive.
Nearby activities: Plenty to explore on foot: parks, tours, restaurants, and architectural sights. Visited Museum of Fine Arts, Discovery Park, and explored downtown churches and buildings.
Walkability: Excellent. Most attractions within easy walking distance. Valet parking available if needed. Only used car for Museum of Fine Arts visit.
Food and drinks: Restaurant and bar in lobby, better for drinks than dinner. In-room dining menu offers more options, perfect for families. Food was delicious, but room service arrived less than hot.

David, Jesse, and Michelle at the front desk were very personable. Room was clean and when I needed anything it was promptly brought to the room. I’m always fortunate to get a quiet room near the amenities. The only issue I had was with valet, I never particularly like using valet but they have a QR code to scan that takes you to a text you send to request your car and both times I requested the car they said they were too busy and that I had to do it in person. Once was at 9pm and there was a valet guy just sitting in their room and no cars were being pulled up and mine was the only one that was brought to the front while I waited for it. Second time it was relatively busy but when I tried to hand off my ticket to the hotel porter before checking out he said I had to check out before requesting the car, while I was standing infront of the front desk. Then when I get home tonight I noticed my car lights are on because they switched the car lights to always on instead of leaving them on automatic. If I hadn’t noticed this my car battery could have died. Just not what you expect from a 5 star hotel.

My recent stay at the JW Marriott Houston was outstanding, thanks to the exceptional service provided by the staff. While I experienced an issue with a room service order that was completely missed, the hotel’s response was swift and professional.
Mr. Cunningham promptly addressed the problem, ensuring the situation was resolved to my satisfaction. It’s clear that the team takes guest concerns seriously and is committed to providing excellent service.
Despite the inconvenience, the way the staff handled the situation has earned my trust. I look forward to staying here again and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Houston.
