This park use to have 2 pools, and after Harvey the city parks filled the large pool and cut the small dog park in half to transfer the remaining pool to the large dog park. They tried to install grass but it was promptly washed away by the following 100 year storm that spring season. Now it’s just dirt and mulch. The fence line that runs along the bike path is like a swamp and that is because the landscape architectural design is a major engineering failure. Some genius blocked off the natural slope for drainage w/ the gigantic large dog pool that is now buried. Now there is no grass in the large dog side because the Houston parks gave up on it. Also, the only pool remaining that used to be in the small dog park only has 1 pump working instead of the original 3-4 pumps.I’ve seen a pit lock its jaw on another dog in the large dog area for over 10 minutes. Don’t bring kids to the large area especially if they are eye level with the large dogs.I have even seen someone let their daughter swim in the brown dirty water.

This is an impressive dog park inside an even more impressive city park (Buffalo Bayou). The large dog section has a great water feature that was being enjoyed by several dogs and their owners while we were there. We chose the small dog area because my little guy is a bit on the anxious side. The small dog area is big enough for a nice stroll around with good views of the nearby larger park, and an over-the-fence view of the larger dogs playing in their zone. I can't wait to more fully explore the Bayou park and enjoy the dog enclosure while we're there. Good job Houston!

I wish there was more grass than dirt but it’s a nice wide open space for my Border Collie to run. I remember when we would go before it was a dog park. All grass.

Big spaces for dogs to run around

Huge space, open field, grassy area, trees, man-made pond, small/big dog fence separation, benches, covered seating, water house/fountain. The walking around the open field gives you clear view to keep an eye on your doggos while you get your steps in. This is my dog's happy place! ?Dog-friendliness: Both the small and big dog areas are roomy enough to run, play with newfound friends or keep some distance for those doggos that value their personal space. Just enough trees to keep them sniffing and exploring and more trees being planted. The water pond is popular, especially on hot days. Both the small and big dog areas have a water station offering drinking water for the dogs and a water hose to rinse off the playtime off the fur babies.

Great dog park in Buffalo Bayou park. Dogs and their humans are friendly. Separate big and small dog areas, but only the big dogs have a pond. Fairly clean. No human restrooms. Parking is limited.

Johnny Steele Dog Park in Houston is the kind of place where you and your furry friend can unleash your inner wild side. This doggy paradise offers a paw-some experience with its vast, well-maintained grounds, which are ideal for four-legged frolics. The off-leash areas are tail-waggingly spacious, allowing dogs to run, jump, and socialize to their hearts' content. The park provides separate sections for large and small breeds, ensuring that every pup feels safe and comfortable. What makes Johnny Steele Dog Park truly shine is the sense of community. Dog owners here are friendly and responsible, creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. It's a great place to meet fellow dog lovers, exchange training tips, and share stories about your furry companions. The park's location along Buffalo Bayou adds a beautiful backdrop, and you can enjoy a scenic stroll with your pup along the bayou's walking trails. However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. During peak hours, the park can get quite crowded, and parking may be a bit of a hassle. Be sure to bring plenty of water for your pup, as the Texas heat can be quite intense. In summary, Johnny Steele Dog Park is a haven for dogs and their owners. It's a place where tails wag, friendships form, and memories are made. If you're looking for a top-notch dog park in Houston, this one definitely deserves a visit. Johnny Steele Dog Park: Where every dog's tail is a paintbrush, and happiness is the masterpiece.

It was nice enough. The big dog park just has dirt on most of it. The little dog park looked nicer.
