I really loved volunteering here initially. The volunteers I met while setting up apartments, building household kits and delivering groceries were all great people. In July, I was placed on a Welcome Team with three other volunteers and assigned to serve a refugee family with a terminally ill child. Two members of my team (a married couple with "a heart for the nations"), never did anything. They seemed to be disgusted by the lovely family we were supposed to help. The assigned team leader would engage with the family, but would not actually help them with anything. The team leader then texted the family to say she was too busy to help them with anything anymore after only two months.HWR did nothing to help improve the actions of this 'team' who failed to serve this family at all. These other three volunteers on my team have made this family feel terrible and have left me to apologize and try to explain why they did not fulfill their obligations at all. This is a horrible organization.

Fantastic faith-based non profit welcoming refugees with dignity and honor, sharing the tangible love of Jesus with them and faithfully proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. There are so many ways to support and engage with them and I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Houston Welcomes Refugees is very well organized and run by smart, compassionate people who are effective at using volunteers to truly help the most vulnerable in our community. I am blessed to be associated with them.

I am so glad that I got connected to houston welcomes refugees. It has the most amazing people and mission - welcome, support, and love foreigners and show them God's love. I am blessed to be on a welcome team to a mother and her 4 children who don't speak English. They are so happy when we visit them, talk to them, teach them, and play games with them. It has been an enriching experience for everyone involved - even those friends around me who are always asking, "What do they need?" or "How can I help?". If you want to provide a unique experience to your family, consider volunteering for a 6-month period with HWR. The effects will be life-changing and long-lasting.

I Absolutely LOVE everything HWR is about! The refugee families I’ve met are so loving and so warm. I’ve learned so much about what it means to love as God loves. My children and family have learned so much about different cultures and languages. I love how HWR encourages families to befriend and love other families. Seeing my kids play soccer or blow bubbles with their new friends from all over the world is so beautiful! I highly recommend HWR!!!!

I have learned so much about the lives of refugee families here in Houston by becoming friends with many through HWR. I have seen how hard working they are trying to provide better opportunities for their children and seen the difficulties they face each day as they try to assimilate into our culture. This organization effectively facilitates this.
