Best for Y-DNA research!

Family Tree DNA’s BigY-700 is the best Y-DNA test available, supported by an active community of volunteer experts to help interpret results (official and unofficial Facebook groups can be valuable resources for new and experienced users alike). However, the website feels outdated and slow, and some community advice can be misleading. For example, BigY may only provide for some testers a Y-haplogroup dating back over 2000 years, and additional costly tests are often necessary. Furthermore, some recommendations—like testing close relatives to have private variants named—may not align with all users' goals. Other products: Y-37 and Y-111 (useless for most users. Go for BigY and save yourself the frustration); autosomal DNA just OK (now they offer a partial Y-haplogroup usually several thousdand years old, something that 23andMe has been doing for years); mtFull Sequence (not very useful for genealogy. Lots of room for improvement in the way these results are presented).

Family Tree DNA is my favorite DNA testing company. I have tested my parents at all 5 sites and FTDNA is the site that gives results, match lists and you can view trees with no further subscriptions. They also are the only company with Big Y and that has helped break thru some brick walls in my family lines. Family Tree DNA has groups with volunteer project administrators who are very helpful.

It’s difficult to rate this company because I have yet to receive my DNA results which I submitted a sample a month and a half ago and now am being told it will be another month and a half because of ….well I am not sure why because it wasn’t explained to me. I’ll wait to get the results and then give a current product and service rating. My advice is if you utilize their services be prepared to wait and wait and wait…

Family Tree DNA sells genetic tests for genealogical research. Currently, four different tests are available, and they range in price from $79 to $449. Two years ago, I purchased the least expensive test, the Family Finder test. I wanted to compare its results to those of competing companies. Today I logged in to view my results again. Attached to this review is a photo of my ethnicity estimates. These ethnicity estimates do NOT seem to be as accurate as competing companies' estimates. I feel disinterested in using other features on Family Tree DNA's website. I may build a family tree there, and I may pay additional money to learn about my health risks, but I already obtained that information from competing companies, and I like those other companies better.

Customer service is horrible. I hope the results of my DNA tests (forthcoming) are accurate. I gave Family Tree DNA a tentative rating of 3. I'll update it higher or lower, if warranted, based on my continuing interaction with the company.

This online DNA testing site is very unprofessional and leaves much to be desired. They are liars and don't live up to their promises. I purchased a kit in error .... the rep told me to refuse it or send it back and I would get a refund. It is getting close to 2 months now and I have yet to receive my refund. I caled my bank today and explained to them what happened filing a dispute against FAMILYTREEDNA. I sent this company 3 or 4 emails and no-one reaches back to me. They lie and make promises they don't keep... all they want is your money and provide you with poor quality services. I even question how good their test results are. If you smart go somewhere else and do business.

After one successful test, we ordered DNA tests for the extended family - but never received them. For over 5 months now, we've been calling and emailing the company, asking to receive the results of the tests or a refund. The company claims, without proof, that the samples were not usable. We have seen no evidence to support this claim, nor did we receive a refund. Thus, after paying hundreds of dollars, we are left with nothing.

I have used FTDNA since 2008 to work with Gibson YDNA. It is exciting at the advances being made and to see so many people adding to the group. We are starting to get answers which is a big WIN for me! Definitely the best at what they do best!!!

Based on the reviews from the past 10 years one has to wonder how is Family Tree DNA still in business? They obviously are completely incapable - but supposedly have been in business since 2000. I uploaded my data from 23andMe to Family Tree DNA's system based on MyHeritage/Geni recommendation, hoping to get matches. Instead all I got was a webpage that tells me that it's loading... endlessly. The data never actually loads. Now the question is: Are they selling this genetic data, that comes with names and addresses, to someone? Is anyone investigating this? I'm not saying that they are, just wondering how they actually stay in business with this terrible track record. Everyone who leaves a review here should also contact the Houston, TX Better Business Bureau.

Of the many common surnames to me I was able to learn my correct line. The Big Y-700 was the most benificial test allowing me to see into my paternal past thousands of years.
