Katelyn and all the ladies at Island Hair Retreat are great! I have never had a bad cut here. They take the time to listen to your needs and want you want, and make recommendations if you ask. They are walk in only, and don't take colors after a certain time of day so if you want those services I would advise to call ahead before you go in! Great experience you won't regret it!

My haircut is simple. I only go once every 4-6 weeks mainly because my neck looks bad.
I went to Island Retreat on 61. Pretty chill place. Music was good. I asked how much and one lady said $18. Got into see Savanna with no wait ( 3:00 Monday). I biked there so was a little hot and sweaty, not drenched. I said “ sorry I’m a little sweaty, maybe you want to do a shampoo first?” She said “ so what are we doing with your hair today!” Completely ignoring my concern. I guess it didn’t bother her. She wasn’t very talkative which I’m usually ok with, but new to the island I could have used a LITTLE more chitchat. She seemed a little subdued. When I asked her how her day was going she said “ can’t complain “. I told her keep it long on top and shorter on the sides and back. I said sometimes I do a #2, but longer and blended is good too. I like that she did the fade with the special scissor and not just clipping the whole thing. She was done in like 10 minutes. Kind of unusual that she didn’t touch the top AT ALL! I said “ looks good, but can you just trim up the dead ends on top?” She did trim it nice, not too much. Check out was $20, and I didn’t ask about the $18. Tip $5, should have been like 3, but I work service industry. In and out no frills and reasonable prices. Oh and her booth was decorated nice!
Hair type: Light brown white guy hair. Medium length.

I've long wanted a barber shop where my kids and I were regulars. This is a salon but for my purposes it's a barber shop. I've been to many barbers and salons in and out of Galveston and nothing fit my criteria to become "our place".
My criteria, and probably yours too:
Be clean: So many places are too often filthy--whether dusty decor or old soltion in the disinfectant jar. This is a profession in hygiene after all. Island Hair Retreat is clean.
Be friendly: Call me old fashioned but I want to give buisness to people who act like they want my buisness. Don't treat me like I'm just getting in the way of you and your break time. Island Hair Retreat treated me and my kids like good friends.
Be good at styling hair: Please don't make me go home to get out my clippers and fix something that I paid you to do. Island Hair Retreat has my kids and myself looking good and feeling good every time. I even tried something new per my IHR stylist's suggestion and I loved it.
Be affordable: I am the patriarch of a large family with 6+ people for which to pay. I also tip well for service done well. If the price is a good value I can afford to give you our buisness monthly. Island Hair Retreat is our place.

Just got highlights and a trim done by Katelynn! It came out sooo good. She was quick, friendly, and when I told her I only wanted 3 inches taken off she ONLY took 3 inches off. 10 out of 10!

Worst place I have ever been. The older blonde lady for one is clueless. There was another stylist talking to me who actually understood and the older blonde told her to stop talking to me. I went in with hair at my shoulders , knowing it was damaged. I showed this women 6 different cuts and styles, two stacked bobs, one just a blunt layered cut and three pixie cuts. She kept saying they were all the same. Mind you, not once did she bother to hear that I too used to do hair. Needless to say there was no salvaging what she did to my hair. I got up in middle of my cut, of course they already got the payment from my husband. But that will be resolved tomorrow. But now my new lovely look is completely shaved. I had to shave my head due to this woman’s stupidity and inability to listen let alone comprehend. Run. Or let your toddler cut your hair!! Believe when I say the toddler will do much much better!!

I walked in after having read positive reviews. Kayla welcomed me warmly and I told her I just needed a trim to my hair. I wear it long, usually in a pony tail. I needed her to trim it about 2 inches to make it shoulder length again. She did a spectacular job and I am very pleased. My wife was so pleased also that she said she might go there for a haircut as well.

Been bringing my son here for years after school, today Kayla(newer) was rude no eye contact; roller her eyes twice Icould sense the tension in her as soon as she saw us walk in. The second time i asked for someone else. Never had a bad experience before. I hope she has a better day tomorrow. Savannah was friendly as always, did a great job. Kayla continously rolled her eyes every time the door opened.

Laura and I had a great time! I have never cut my hair super short, but I was ready to. She made sure to talk to me through each move to make sure I was ok with everything.
