This is what they won’t tell you. Friendly reminder, diagnostics aren’t always free.
In short:
They charge a $132 base diagnostics fee if you decide their quote to fix your car is out of your price range. Don’t let them mislead you to think they’ll “take a look at it” for free. If they “look at it”, you pay.
My story:
I brought my car in having already pulled a code with my own scanner tool. I already knew what likely needed to be replaced. All I wanted was a quote how much they’d charge to replace it and some peace of mind I was on the right track. Apparently that peace of mind costs $132. I got there as soon as I could coming from work. It was closing time and I dropped it off for them to take a look at it the next morning while I was at work. Long story short, they called me at 3pm the next day to tell me that it would cost over $500 to fix a part I can buy for $17 and would typically take most professionals 30min to 1 hour to replace. I told them I’d be there to pick it up after work since the quote seemed too steep. When I got there to pick it up, it was $132 diagnostic fee for a problem I was correct in diagnosing myself before taking it in. Im not even sure they did a full diagnosis to rule out any of the multiple possibilities that could stem from the problems I was having. Take your business elsewhere and read these other negative reviews. They all hold water.
I understand knowledge isn’t always free, but $132 is a lot for looking at a part that is accessible with just your eyes.

Conroe's Choice Automotive is a circus of incompetence and deceit. The manager, Austin, with his dismissive attitude, made the whole experience a nightmare. Despite dropping off my truck and authorizing work, communication was nonexistent. When I finally got an update, the bill was way higher than quoted, accusing me of dishonesty. They even had the nerve to insinuate that I was inconveniencing them. Their lack of trust in customers is laughable considering their own unauthorized work. Despite my efforts to find a solution, they refused to budge. Only after my dad intervened did Gene agree to reduce the bill. Avoid this place like the plague. The 5-star reviews are questionable because my experience was anything but. After seeing someone else's review detailing a similar experience, I felt compelled to share mine. This all happened back in February.

We will file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office and the Better Business Bureau and we'll file a small claims court law suit against these guys. They completed repairs without our consents, when we wanted to take the car to another place they said we were responsible for 3 hours diagnostic that cost over 300$ and another 200 to fix something we did not consent to. According to them the more incompetent they are in finding the problem with the car the more money we have to pay them lol. In the end they offered to actually fix the main issue for 800$ which we will be disputing in court. Great guys though, nice and friendly thieves.

Found them searching for suspension repair in area. Read previous reviews, then brought my light truck in. Very pleased with service and rate to install two new front struts. Thought I had bad wheel-hub assembly, but they assured me it was only the old tires. Replaced tires and wobble cleared. Saved me hundreds! Good Job!

I called to ask Gene if he could get a part for my folks because they're there on vacation and their car broke down. Not only did he help check on the part, but informed me that it probably isn't the problem and continued to call my father and assist him! If I didn't live 400 miles away I'd definitely take him a thank you card and some cookies for being so kind!

We have trusted Conroe’s Choice Automotive with all of our vehicles for the past 20 years. They were always right the first time in diagnosing and fixing issues, whether on my husband’s various Ford F-150’s or on my various imports. As always, they repaired my Jaguar and Land Rover after giving practical options (use Ford parts?) and pricing (and timing). They also gave great advice on when to start thinking about replacing our cars with newer models. They are quick and very professional. THE BEST mechanics we have ever found!

I had hope for this place when I saw the reviews. I also had my fingers crossed because I wanted Genn to look into my vehicle. He wasn't there yet but I didn't worry because the reviews were great!I got a diagnostic on Friday Oct. 13th to see why my vehicle keeps stopping while driving. They notified me that it was a simple fix (positive terminal loose) and then mentioned another issue that I did not come in there for. I got it fixed since I was already there and I trusted their judgement. My check engine light came back on the very next day and my van stopped while I was driving on the highway 2 or 3 days later. I was no longer in town by then so I had to wait to return. I arrived Oct 20th to get it looked at again and was notified I would have to leave it over the weekend. I'm not from Conroe and don't know anyone there so I can't do that so I left. I went back for a full or partial refund since none of my issues were fixed and I needed to go somewhere else. The manager Austin had a smart mouth. I mentioned that I tried to come as soon as possible and Austins reply was "Well you didn't get here as soon as possible" That smart remark didn't sit right with me and I continued to request a refund or to speak with the owner Genn. I was then told to calm down multiple times. I asked for documentation that was supposed to show me what the mechanics checked during the one hour diagnostic. Austin notified me that it was on the paper he gave me the day I got the diagnostic. I asked him to print me out another one. We went back and forth again and then I asked for the paper again and the owners information to call. He placed the paper on the counter and said "boom!". I sarcastically said thanks and he then says "See the attitude". I mentioned how his "boom" was unnecessary. He did all of that but the paper does not tell me ANYTHING about what the mechanics checked during the diagnostic. Absolutely nothing. I now have to go to another mechanic just to find out why my vehicle keeps stopping WHILE I am driving. This is very dangerous and they wasted my time.

Just giving Conroe a heads up,that's there's still a automotive shop you can trust with hometown roots,they diagnosed my Chevy Silverado ltz 4wheel Dr and fixed my ac and found a broken motor mount, reasonable rates and very professional,had me up and going in less than 34 hours, thanks Gene and company,

Well, from the poor reviews on here, I would assume Gene was not working today. My 21 year old son had a safety flap issue on his diesel gas tank. He was nearly out of gas, so went to closest repair shop he could find in Conroe. We went in knowing what the simple issue was yet were charged $120 for "diagnostics". Son called my wife to discuss options, so she called the shop to discuss. The boys at Conroe's Choice were chomping at the bit to give the estimate to replace this $12 part for some stupid price plus the hours of labor. She said no, could we just get the latch free so that he could get gas and take it to our normal mechanics. She then asked if she could borrow the tool needed to dislodge the part so he could fuel up. Dude says no, those are my tools and we charge to use them. She calls our mechanic, and he says just get the car to him if at all possible, and the tool needed to remove the piece can be purchased for $10 buck at AutoZone across the street. She tells Conroe's Choice boys she, and her husband will be by to pick it up. Guy says okay, I will put the keys in it and you can pick up at AutoZone, and I really don't care if you are a repeat customer or not, LITERALLY said those words to my wife as I got into the car. Well now I am PO'd that one I have to go do this after work, and two this guy is a complete A-Hole to my wife and son. We get the part at AutoZone and I go to remove the flap and get the car out of there. I can't find the keys in the car so I am walking over to the 3 Conroe Choice boys standing around staring at me coming from the car, not working on the cars in their garage, mind you. My wife convinces me to be nice, and dude yells at me across the lot and says, Keys are in gas compartment! They stare at me as I walk back, restraining myself from laying into these jerkovs, and lo and behold, they had already popped the latch off!!! THIS was why they were such D bags, because they were ready to take my son to the cleaners for this simple fix. They had already, probably accidentally, solved the minor problem and since my wife questioned the charges and estimate they were out of a payday!!! Unless you are mechanically savvy, do not go there, but I am sure those of you who are mechanically inclined already know this. Let's see how the owner, or Gene feels about this review, and his guy telling customers who had already paid their bill they do not give a crap about retaining customers.Sorry about the rant, but mechanics who screw over kids and women are the scum of the earth and deserve to be exposed.

One word comes to mind with my experience taking my car to Gene (owner) and Conroe’s Choice Automotive and that’s INTEGRITY! They treated and serviced my car as if it was there very own, and I’m extremely appreciative. They were very honest and they didn’t want me to take my car after it was done unless I was 100% satisfied with their work. Thank you Gene and Conroe’s Choice Automotive.
