My wife and I went to Florence TX on a recent Thursday for some lighthearted shopping in the unique shops in the town. While in this great little down-home town we decided to go to the La Fuente restaurant on Main Street for lunch. Now, this is not a fancy restaurant. In fact, it is small and very unassuming. To be very honest, my expectations were that we would receive the same typical fare that I have received from most Tex-Mex restaurants. To my great surprise it was much more than I expected. The restaurant probably holds only 30 guests … the service was extremely prompt and extremely courteous. The young man who served us was very gracious and tolerant of us taking a little bit of time to figure out what we wanted. My wife decided on the taco salad, and I chose the carne guisada plate. What I expected on my plate was canned refried beans, typical “from a pouch” Spanish rice and somewhat dry and marginally flavorful carne guisada. What I received was obviously not from some combination of restaurant cans and bags. It was exceptionally flavorful, tender, succulent carne guisada as well as refried beans that were excellent with queso fresca on top as well as a great Spanish rice and rich pica de gallo and lettuce. The hot tortillas were extremely good too! My wife’s taco salad was quite large, and not skimpy on any ingredient. The portions were excellent for our lunch – in fact, too much for either of us to eat. While at the restaurant - because of my seating location - I was able to watch the serving and attending staff as they came and went. They religiously washed their hands thoroughly between table cleanings and took every possible precaution concerning cleanliness. Another fantastic plus was the serving of each plate that was designed to be warm on very heated plates. Something that you do not get in most restaurant these days. Hot food on hot plates – what a concept ! And I do not mean just the searing platters of fajitas which were on metal searing plates on a wooden board at other tables – I mean all heated entrees! The attention to detail and concern for the food they were preparing and serving was outstanding. Our server came back numerous times asking if we needed anything else and if everything was satisfactory – unlike large chain restaurants where the server may return once during the meal, ask perfunctory questions and then disappear. My wife and I have traveled extensively and have found few “small” restaurants in the US which rise to this standard of quality in service. I am confident some may and will find fault with this or that – but for a very small “hometown” restaurant having what I would term an outstanding ethic and excellent food at a price that is not overwhelming (such as in larger communities) – I would highly recommend La Fuente. I make this recommendation at the risk of increasing their popularity and not being able to be seated the next time we go to Florence for lunch!

This place is a little off the path in Florence, Texas, but it is totally worth it! Chicken fajitas, green chile enchiladas all of it was great! Prices are low and portions are huge! Definitely will be back
