I rented a car from Thrifty at the Austin - Bergstrom International Airport last week. I waited in line for over an hour to get the car. Once I finally got the car it smelt like smoke really bad. I told the parking lot attendant and she said she would make a note so we wouldn't be charged for it. My credit card was just charged for over 3 times the amount it was supposed to be charged for. I reviewed the receipt and there was a $275 cleaning fee and a $104.97 damage fee. I brought the car back in the same condition I found it in. In reality I should be the one charging them the $275 cleaning fee for having to deal with a terrible smelling car all weekend. Every time I got into the car it smelt so bad. I had to stop at Bucee's and get a car freshener and that hardly helped. I Highly recommend not using Thrifty but if you do and you end up getting a smoke smelling car do not leave until they give you another car.

Arrived April 12, 2024, 8 PM and greeted by a long line at the shared Thrifty/Dollar counter. At least 10 people ahead of us and 20 behind some minutes later. One rep at the counter. After an hour wait with no news I approached the counter to inquire. Overbooked and zero cars available. Was informed they were open until 1 AM and we were to wait. An option was offered. Return at 7 AM next day and there will be "plenty" of cars. We waited until 10 PM. The line advanced through attrition, not because customers were getting cars. No rep came to talk to customers in line to apologize and explain the situation. We left. We took a taxi to the hotel at our expense, returned the next day at 7 AM at our expense and voilà! A car. We were offered a phone number with a vague promise of a voucher. Thrifty, please spare us your standard response to this review. We'd like our cab fare refunded please.

Terrible. No vehicles available even with reservation. +2hr line, ended up going with a different service that had vehicles.

My airline changed their schedule months before our flight, but I didn't think to adjust my Thrifty reservation. So I arrived for my car 2 hours early. Thrifty wouldn't honor the quote on my reservation because I was too early. The local manager said for me get my original quoted price I and my wife would have to wait for nearly 2 hours until the original stated pu time. I wasn't about to sit in for nearly 2 hours. The daily rate changed from $70/day to $178/day, adding nearly $400 to my final bill. And on top of that, Thrifty check in lines are notoriously slow near everywhere I've ever rented from them. I'm a Blue Chip member but I've only ever seen one Blue Chip member line, and it wasn't manned.

I gave this company a one because there was no option for zero. There are 5 rental car companies here and Thrifty is the only one with a HUGE line that is barely moving. One person at the counter for a while & now finally 2. Others in our group got their cars from Avis & Enterprise and left about 45 minutes ago, while we are STILL here after waiting about an hour and half with 6 people still ahead of us. I guess you get what you pay for, but the extra $100 would have been well worth avoiding this company. One in our group is unable to cancel because they went through Travelocity or we would have left like many others in line with us have done. (At least that moved us up!) This is my first google review & wanted to try to help others avoid a headache if possible!

Absolutely the worst rental car experience we've ever had. Waiting over an hour in the line with a reservation only to find out they didn't have cars. At least tell the people waiting in line that they probably will not get a car. It did not start our trip to Austin off on the right foot. Just terrible. Will never use them again.

Be ready to wait for the car 3 hours

Austin-Bergstrom airport location is the worst. Even when you check in, you have wait in an hour long line to get your rental, regardless of time of day. Not worth the "deal" pricing.

Over charges and insists on basic insurance regardless of personal insurance

Booked through Travelocity. The name on the reservation always defaults to my husband. This has never mattered before. Thrifty would not rent us the car we had paid for because he doesn't have a credit card in his name. We were advised to contact Travelocity and change the name on the booking. Travelocity said they could not change it, but they could cancel it and refund our money. I asked the Thrifty representative if we could just cancel it and re-rent it from them. They said that since it was already reserved for us, it wouldn't be a problem. So we canceled the reservation. Then we are told since we are now considered walk-ups and it's an event weekend it will be 4x more than we had previously paid and there's nothing they can do about it. I have never had an issue using a card under a different name to guarantee incidentals by any other business ever. Now my family and I are stranded in a city we've never been to before.-- I see you responded but unless you're going to make it right, it really means nothing to me that you will supposedly speak with management of that branch. I am canceling my future car rental bookings and will no longer use Hertz/Dollar/Thrifty in the future. Also, at the desk, the agent said if we had booked through them instead of Travelocity it would have clearly stated the rules about using a credit card. It states that a credit card will be needed as a deposit, not that spouses or family members don't qualify or that it has to be in the exact same name. At least not from what I've seen. Also, some of my cc have my middle name and some don't. How does that affect being "the exact same"?

Closed. Had to get Ub3r out of there. See attached photo. Never got the car. Plan trying not renting cars. Use ride share.

Charged a $350 fee for "missing key." I put the keys in their drop box... The least they could have done was reach out by phone or email to ask if I had the keys. I will never rent from Thrifty again. This location or otherwise.

I haven't even started my rental but i just wanted to talk to a real person to comfirm some details and ask about after hours pickup and drop off. Ive called 10 times and not once has it rang or been picked up by a live agent, as if that part of the phone was disconnected.

I was nervous about my booking after reading reviews but I had a really smooth experience with this thrifty. No wait line when I arrived but it may be because it was 7 am. I think the woman at the desk was named Lashonda (sorry if I’m misremembering) but she was super nice and helpful so no complaints at all about the service! The car was pretty new and was in good condition. The back seat had some dirt on it but I took photos just incase, aside from that didn’t bother me. Got my deposit back with no issue. I don’t know if I just got lucky but I am very happy with my experience with this thrifty!
