I was not impress with Noah Grimes at Athens Equine. Misdiagnosed my horse and I considered having her put down. I cried for days before my husband convinced me to get a second opinion and I am so glad I did. She is 27 years old but in great shape and we may have many years left with her. Her X-rays were also not done properly or labeled left/right.

We took a horse I was considering to purchase there for a pre-purchase check up. Dr. Todd was fantastic, extremely thorough. Great, down to earth and highly professional practice. Wish we could use Athens Equine for all of our horses, but that might be too much of a drive from Fort Worth on a regular basis. Best pre-purchase check I have ever requested.

Today, my daughter, was with a client and took a horse, to Dr. Todd, that they were considering for purchase pending a satisfactory soundness exam. This horse is eight years old and does not have a history of being aggressive or dangerous. My daughter is a horse trainer and former high school, college and pro rodeo competitor and has experience with many horses and specializes in colt starting so she is very skilled in reading a horses temperament and rode this horse prior to her client riding before the decision was made to purchase this horse. Dr. Todd did not observe either of them or anyone else riding this horse prior to presenting for pre-purchase soundness exam and before he advised my daughters client regarding this horse. Horses, by nature, are sensitive to unfamiliar situations and people, as any good vet would know. That said, the incident that led to the rapid decline in the professionalism of Dr. Todd and his staff was this…Dr. Todd was standing directly in front of this horse as several vet techs were pulling on the halter, pulling the head down and walking the horse forward. The horse was a little nervous and confused as to what he was being asked to do which frustrated Dr. Todd and out of that frustration, all of a sudden, Dr. Todd balled up his fist and punched this horse with a closed fist, directly in the nose and mouth, hard. Then he proceeds to try to justify his actions, to which there was absolutely no justification whatsoever. Then he proceeded to say that there were no soundness issues however, his statements that followed, clearly reflected his continued attempts to justify his actions. After reflecting, he states, “I don’t normally do that”…really? You should NEVER EVER do that! Written statement says this horse “seems aggressive at times”…translation…MIGHT get aggressive if you punch him in his nose and mouth, hard, with a closed fist because you are pissed he won’t stand still”. Towards the end of the exam, my daughter witness the horse being struck again by staff out of the same frustration. This horse did not display any kind of aggression or dangerous behavior to justify this type of handling. Evidently that is how Dr. Todd and his staff encourage a horse to immediately cooperate and stop resisting. After trashing this prospect and discouraging my daughters client from purchasing this horse that she feels strongly has great potential, he proceeds to convinces her client to spend more money than what was going to be spent, and gives her client his card and assures them HE and his colt starter will find them a horse. This puts my daughters good reputation in jeopardy when she has nothing to gain financially in this purchase and only wants her client safe, first and foremost, and to succeed and achieve her goals in competing in high school rodeo. I am absolutely appalled at what I am hearing and am insisting that this review be done and to insure that happens, she is dictating as I’m typing so these are the words of a first hand eye witness, not those of a third party that was not there. I personally do not recommend anyone who does not want their horse to be mistreated that has potential to cause lasting issues to use this vet because he should know that his actions today and the actions of his staff that followed with striking this horse a second time out of frustration goes beyond discipline and amounts to blatant abuse and a complaint with the proper authorities and medical boards will be forthcoming. It only takes one person one time to completely undo and negatively affect permanently, any training a horse has had. UPDATE under separate comment.

I'm very picky about my vets and so far I've been very pleased with all the vets here at this clinic. They are very informative. I like how they will show an explain things to you, which I appreciate because I'm always very interested in whats going on. Very honest and reasonably priced.

Dr. Madeline was excellent with us. Our horse was having an allergic reaction to gnats. We also wanted a check-up on our 18 yo mare. Being novice horse people, we learned a lot and truly enjoyed our visit. Thankful for the explanations, education, and friendliness!

Dr Todd is first class. As a relatively new horse owner I really appreciate that he will take the time to really explain everything to me. He is professional and gracious with the horse and owner. He really knows his stuff and is surrounded by a great team not to mention the awesome facility. Keep up the good work and thank you agin.

I was recommended here by a lot of people in the QH industry and within 5 min I could tell Dr Todd isn’t like most vets. You could feel the great energy and care they have for equine animals I definitely will be coming back.
