Viva Market Mercado Latino is the newest addition to the recently developed retail plaza near the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and I-40 / I-24, located just south of the Waffle House. Now open for business every day from 8am - 9pm, they offer a specialized selection of Mexican and Latin American foods. They are still stocking the refrigerators and freezers to full capacity, so stay tuned. The meat selection and quality at their butcher appears a cut above the other Latin American markets in the immediate area. They had a variety of pork cuts, beef, chicken and seafood, as well as some ready made items, including two different selections of ceviche. I opted for a taste of their ceviche de pescado; $4.99/pound, with a pretty good amount of white fish. Tasty, especially for the price tag. The grocery section is modestly stocked with vegetables, cheeses and freshly made salsas at very reasonable prices. One thing in particular that I love about this store is their offering of certain chiles in bulk bins, giving the customer the ability to choose only what they need and avoid the dreaded 3.5oz of leftover chiles in a now open bag (have about 5 of these at home...). The aisles hold a variety of flours, canned goods and hot sauces, and on the perimeter, and if you prefer, you'll find more packages of dried chiles than you'll know what to do with. A welcome new addition to the neighborhood!
