The Alex Haley Museum and Interpretive Center offers an interesting and educational tour of the author's well-preserved childhood home, which sits in a neighborhood with informational markers. The house contains many family photos and period-correct items. Visitors learn about Haley’s early formative years, what led to the writing of "Roots," and his family's legacy. The tour includes the porch where he heard the stories of his ancestors and the burial site. After the house tour, guests can enjoy an exhibition and a small film about the making of the "Roots" series. The tour guides are described as very friendly, funny, knowledgeable, and welcoming, often leading to interesting conversations. The overall experience is highly recommended and definitely worth a visit, providing a great afternoon that is both fun and informative. The ticket prices are quite reasonable, and the gift shop supports the museum. It is advised to check opening days before visiting.
I enjoyed my visit with my husband and our parents. It was a NAACP/ church event. Pastor Tate was the mc. I had previously read the book, 'Finding the Good,' before the visit. One of the speakers was mentioned in the book. Surreal!! I would encourage anyone to visit.
