We didn't know what we were walking into when we opened the front door but this is an adorable little gem. The coffee is wonderful. I absolutely recommend this place!

First time here and I was excited, but they don't take Discover! So I had to order just a latte with the $5 cash I had on me. I had to put my muffin back. Don't come here hungry, they don't have food. Plus they don't accept credit payments for less than $3. The guy at the counter was super rude. Paid almost $4 for a tiny latte. I told him it was for here but he put in a to go cup anyways. I usually tip but I didn't give him anything. On top of that he barked at me when I almost picked up the wrong coffee. I come to Nashville a lot. And I almost always stay at Embassy Suites which is across from this place. I'm not coming back here! Hire people with better attitudes. If you're going to be located in the most touristy part of Nashville accept all major forms of credit cards. Common sense business. And the coffee wasn't even good. Pumpkin spice latte had a liquor like after taste to it. The small size has 3 sips in it. The atmosphere, decor and music are fine but I'm too angry to even enjoy it now!

This gem of a coffee shop was down the street from my hotel while in town for a work meeting. I love the atmosphere, the comfy couches, the sunlight streaming through the windows, the classical music and of course, amazing coffee. I didn't get anything fancy, just an almond milk latte, hot one day and iced the next, both were perfection.

Our Airbnb description told us that basic toiletries, including shampoo and conditioner. Whelp....that was wrong. A quick Yelp search for a market or convenience store in walking distance (because we scored some free street parking and were NOT going to risk losing the spot unless absolutely necessary) brought up J & J's Market. I was a little nervous that the "market" was deceiving and it was going to be more like a cafe and liquor store. And it is ALSO those things! As far as necessities go, you'll find some. You won't have a lot of options...but they have some there! I grabbed a travel size bottle of Tresemme shampoo and conditioner and was ready to be on my way. Then I was concerned I might not meet the credit card minimum. But worry not! They have an exceptionally reasonable $3 credit card minimum. The cashier was friendly and J&J's has got you covered when your Airbnb doesn't have the toiletries they promised. Thanks, dudes.

I've found my perfect rainy day nook. It's J&Js Market. Everything about it is f***ing unapologetic. Parking is a nightmare. There are leaks all over the ceiling and buckets littering the floor collect the dirty drops. The floor is an uneven mixture of green and white tiles and red concrete. No wall is the same: wooden tiles, brick, a red curtain, a chalk board, a small portrait of Rupert Grint holding a fiddle. They sell cigarettes and beer up front and coffee in the back. It's perfect. Sitting in ancient recliners, patterned love-seats, and wooden rickety chairs everywhere are Vandy students and hipsters. An odd combination. There's a very clear and awkward delineation between the two. I observe 3 tanned and touristy weekend warriors wander in hungover from their midtown galavanting the night before. Their faces go from smug disinterest to sheer horror upon lowering their glance to the rainwater buckets everywhere. They flee. This place is what I wish all places could be. Being a business owner myself, I love capitalism. But my inner historian weeps every time gentrification destroys places like this: every crack in the concrete and stain on the ceiling has a story. The sterile white washed modern coffee houses and cocktail lounges sweeping across American gentrification zones have their purpose. But they will never have my heart. Give me your Dino's. Give me your J&Js.

I wanted to try this place while visiting my boyfriend's apartment since it was within walking distance. The interior is exactly what you want in a local coffee shop and super aesthetic (I even took a few photos while I was there to post on Flickr). They have super creative drinks and names to boot. I ordered the Studying Nietzsche with only two shots of espresso (three shots would've made me wired). It was pretty sweet with still a hint of espresso flavor along with a nice Swiss chocolate flavor. My boyfriend got the Mound of Joy which was sweet and coconutty without being overpowering. I really want to visit this place again!

This place is a gem. It's a cool refuge in the heat of nashville that will pull you into its bosom like home. The coffee drinks are great and the Wi-Fi is reliable. It has the faint smell of patchouli and must that will transport you back to your college days. The outside is not sketchy-it's authentic in a sea of shiny condominiums and Starbucks'. You should go here and sit in a chair that likely lived most of its life in a grandmother's house and drink one of the best damned lattes you'll ever have.

Really great vanilla latte! It's actually better than Starbucks which really surprised me! And cheaper prices as well! Definitely would recommend and will be back!

Perfect place to get a cup of coffee and work on schoolwork or anything. It's very quiet and has excellent wifi. The coffee is great and there are a lot of tea options as well!

Kind of a typical college town divey coffee shop. I could see it being a good place for people to meet up. I think it would be advantageous if they offered a little more food than muffins and cookies. Even pre-made sandwiches or something like that could be an improvement.

JJ's is my favorite kind of place. You don't really know what it is, but you know that you like it. To start with, coffee. Don't let the snacks and booze steal your attention as you have to walk further in to see the coffee bar/menu. The specialty drinks look amazing- but intense, so try at your own risk. I decided on a small vanilla latte, classic. I kick myself when I order small and get 8-10 oz. 'cause I personally just prefer more milk to espresso. But this small one was so perfectly encapsulated it couldn't have been done better. Really. I was surprised too. There are plenty of tables to sit at and enjoy your beverage. It is a bit mismatched, vintage, and grunge-y feel, but it is comfortable! That's what matters. Seats with a cushion. Now on to what brought me here in the first place- the snack/grocery section. If you're like me and you love candy, chocolates, beer, soda, juice, etc. you will have plenty of unique and yum options to choose from here. It's hard to leave without wondering what cool snack you could be taking with you. Check it out!

This place was awesome. We only ended up here because the closer "deli" was not open on Sunday, so instead we ended up at this very friendly and communal, somewhay crunchy urban cafe. Plenty of comfy seating options, enticing pastries, and damn good coffee. Sold. My wife endorsed J & J by proclaiming this is the kind of place that used to exist in Williamsburg (BK, not VA) many years ago. I daresay it stands on its own merits. Enjoy, Nashville!

Sam is so genuine and sweet, he is the cherry on top of a really wonderful market and cafe. Besides the fact they have a great chocolate selection, besides the fact that their coffee and chai are delicious, besides the fact that their beverage selection is to be rivaled, the owner of J&J's is a Nashville treasure. I hadn't been in J&J's for at least 6 months, it was due to me being pregnant and not drinking coffee and Sam STILL remembered my order and asked me about my job. He truly cares about his customers and it shows. Don't go to some chain, come to JJ's to get your coffee fix or pick up some snacks. Support local!

If you're a local college student looking for a place to study I'd easily bump this up to 3 stars, but overall I was not impressed. The service is a little bit slow, they don't have bathrooms for their customers and the outside of the building is super sketchy! I liked the inside of the building, but was underwhelmed with the somewhat expensive coffee and really wouldn't come back here. It's out of the way and didn't really leave me feeling like I had a good experience. I'm very rarely lead astray by yelp ratings, and I wouldn't actively avoid this place, but I also wouldn't go in unless I was literally walking past the door as I had a coffee craving. If you like artsy hipster vibes or are a college student from the area this may be more your speed and you may want to ignore my review.

This place is much better looking on the inside that it is on the outside. It's a small market + coffee shop. We walked in to grab coffee, and most people in there looked like they were studying. There's quite a few big tables, and lots of old couches. Iced latte was pretty good, altho $5.
