Sonja was sweet and her shop is wonderful. Picked up a buffalo hide drum and stick. It's beautiful and well made. She gave our pups some scrap buffalo hide and they loved it! We also had to have this t shirt and hope when worn it will help remind folks we are all one.

My favorite Native American arts and crafts store anywhere and a must stop destination for anyone looking for authentic handmade items by South Dakota Native artists. The owner, Sonya, truly appreciates her customers and always goes the extra mile. Like so many of the historic retail locations on Main Street in Rapid City, visiting Dakota Drum Co feels like stepping back in time. Eye catching window displays, vintage hardwood, and other classic features all invoke almost therapeutic feelings of nostalgia and pride.

First of all, I have no idea why Dakota Drum Company only has two reviews before mine!!!! They’ve been in business for 20 years or more. There were more than two groups that visited in the half hour or so I was here. This place is REALLY cool!!! Sonja Holy Eagle is like a wise grandma (eventhough I’m old enough to be a grandpa??) you want to sit at the feet of to listen to stories from. Dave Hansen is a pretty funny jokester. Fun to chat with. They have a lot of really nice stuff here. There are beautiful traditional hand scraped Buffalo hide drums in cottonwood frames painted by Sonja Holy Eagle. They also have pow wow drums and hand painted traditional drums, both are one or two sided. They have small 10” drums to very large ones. I bought a 10” wide by 5” deep double sided hand painted drum for $170.00, which is a fair price considering how good the quality is. This was the one high quality product I wanted to buy when visiting South Dakota and I am very happy with it. Sonja also has beautiful hide paintings, Buffalo robes, painted wood carvings, sweet grass, sage, peace pipes,( I think flutes), traditional beadwork, quillwork, which are made by Cheyenne River, Pine Ridge and the Rosebud Native American reservations. There are some other nice things to check out as well. In conclusion, due to very nice people in Sonja Holy Eagle and Dave Hansen, beautiful, high quality products at reasonable prices and supporting the local reservations, I very very highly recommend visiting here. You just might find the perfect, unique gift for friends or something you like for yourself. It’s totally worth stopping here!!!! Thanks for reading. We purchased a hand painted drum and cross from this store and LOVE our new household additions. The lady can even be seen painting the drums in the corner of the shop so you know the merchandise is authentic and made with love and made locally. She was so sweet and informative and I would recommend anyone to shop here before the overpriced place across the street.
