Small, yet fun space.
Our daughter is totally into dinosaurs and fossils, yet the entire family had a fun time looking around.
I appreciate the designation between real and replica fossils.
We would totally visit again and a favorite souvenir from our trip cam from here!

Great small museum. Chuck full of dinosaur fossils. You can spend 3 hours in this small Museum and still not see everything. The gift shop is great as well.

This was an awesome place to take my kiddo who is obsessed with dinos! Very affordable, crazy amount of real dinosaur bones, great little gift shop attached, and friendly staff. Would recommend this over any of the other museums nearby

Fun little gift shop with a small but interesting museum. Visit once and return free the rest of the season. It's worth a stop with kids (or adults) who love dinosaurs.

Super packed and yet, not in a junk store hoarding way. Lots of dead things to look at, comparative displays, stuff from floor to literally ceiling. I spent like 2 hours here. Since it's small, definitely try to come when school is in session. Gift shop is amazing and unfortunately I am not a millionaire or I'd buy so much cool stuff!

Always wanted to stop in and I finally made it…… I WISH I HADN’T waited so long!!!!I’m a rock, Dinosaur, Fossil and Mine nut…. This place has it all. Mineral displays from local Black Hills and more excellent specimens from around the world and local States. Maps of Local Black Hills mines and there locations. The Institute has some of the BEST Specimens of T-Rexes that have been found by Staff in the NW corner of the State and recovered and preserved by the Institute.I spent 2 1/2 hours there and still finding thing of interest and could have spent more time there. It’s a FASCINATING place!!! I will be back and invite everyone visiting the Black Hills/Hill City area with an interest to check it out!!Lotta books, T shirts, mineral specimens, toys and keep sakes in the Gift Shop!

The institute that started it all. The undue restrictions on hobbyist fossil collecting, that is. Yes, the oddly crazy story of Tyrannosaur Sue. Meanwhile, back at the museum, it's a great intro to fossil collecting. (Oops, there I said a bad word. Well, even the NFS now let's you collect fossils so I guess the great ill wind has finally abated and I am in the clear.) Do visit, it is a must see. Great gift shop too.

Absolutely stunning museum and prep work. Giftshop is a little pricey, but considering it supports the institute it's worth it. Pete Larson was also kind enough to meet and talk with my group which was wonderful. Highly recommended for kids and adults alike.

This museum is PACKED! It seems small, but there is SO many neat things to look at, it takes longer than you think! I appreciated it being reasonably priced for our whole family to go in. Our two youngest played with dinosaur toys, colored, and "dug up fossils" in a small kids area while we were able to enjoy the exhibits. The gift shop had many truly unique things to buy. Glad we came!!

Amazing collection of fossils and beautiful stones. Talking with the volunteer guide at the museum made the visit even better, very informative. There is an extensive Black Hills gift shop on site with actual fossils for purchase. Wonderful 20 minute scenic drive from Mt. Rushmore. Also had a great brick oven pizza lunch across the street at Mangiamo Pizzeria.
