The "DAR school" is obviously not what it used to be (a DAR school) but the play areas are still nice for kids and I enjoy the nature/feel of the area.

My grandmother and four of my great aunts all attended this school from 1977–1980 after the death of their parents, and the amount of bullying, sexual harassment, emotional abuse, racism, and blatant discrimination they faced at this school is absolutely horrifying and disgusting, and I am appalled (but sadly, not surprised) that no one else has come forward about the abuse in this place yet. My grandmother attended Tamassee with her 4 sisters, and each of them were ridiculed, assaulted, and tormented by the staff and students alike for their entire stay. They were bullied for their parents’ death, for their skin and hair color, for their heritage, for their weight, pretty much anything you could possibly bully a literal child for. They were called “Native Whores”, told no one would ever love them, that they would never have a home again. They were exposed to illnesses and hazardous conditions. The headmistress at the time was particularly physically and verbally abusive to them, she forced my grandmother to write with a different hand (she is a lefty), and actually called her a liar and *slapped her through the face* when she tried to report the harassment from other girls there. It got so bad towards the end of her stay that my grandma tried to run away, but she was caught and punished by means of starvation and isolation (she was 13 years old). The suffering my grandma and aunts endured at this place still impacts them today, and I wholeheartedly blame Tamassee for a generation of trauma in my family.

This is a gorgeous campus with lots of little hidden gems for you to host a wedding or event. Ceremony, reception, and overnight accommodations.

Most of these reviews are for the school function, but there is a wonderful community hall that is for rent at the school. I was recently at a wedding here and it was simple and amazing at the same time. The staff was wonderful and the venue itself is charming amongst the historic backdrop of the community here. Would totally come back for another wedding.
