Just had the pleasure of meeting Al Reese of the Synovus Lake Murray branch. He resolved my issue expeditiously and professionally. Synovus is lucky to have him.

My three stars is the average of the 5 stars I'd give the employees at Synovus and 1 star I'd give Synovus Bank. I sold my car to a military guy who got a loan through Navy Federal. I verified his car loan check with Navy Federal before I signed over the car title. I questioned that the check was made out to myself and the buyer, but was assured by Navy Federal that this is standard, that the buyer would endorse the check to me, and that any lender would honor their check. Well, Synovus did not honor the check without the buyer physically in their bank even though it was properly endorsed over to me by the buyer. The buyer is in the military and doesn't live near me. Synovus verified with Navy Federal that the check was legitimate and was for a car loan to purchase a car from me and Navy Federal was gladly offering to give Synovus any and all assurances that they needed that the funds would be guaranteed. I even told the employees at Synovus that I would expect them to put a hold on the check until Synovus received funds from Navy Federal. Even though Synovus could not have been any more protected from liability, they still refused to honor the check. This left me in the position of having to track down the buyer, who is a military guy who lives a few hours away to attempt to get the $9k for my car. Synovus' argument was that the buyer (who took my car, who I saw sign the check, who took title to and drove off with my car, who Navy Federal verified to Synovus was the buyer of my car, who got a car loan through Navy Federal, whose ID I got a copy of, etc.-I could go on) could deny signing the check and even if Synovus received funds from Navy Federal that they still might not ultimately receive funds from Navy Federal (that part REALLY confused me) Fortunately, after speaking with Navy Federal about the situation and providing ample documentation, they cashed their loan check. But still, I had to convince Synovus to allow me to deposit cash into my own account from selling my car. They did put a hold on my cash deposit into MY OWN checking account and checked my ID (apparently there are people attempting to put money in random stranger's accounts), but thank goodness Synovus did allow me to deposit cash into my own account and it all worked out. The employees were very nice at Synovus and I believe that they really wanted to help me but I suspect that they were just following policy. which precluded applying any degree of common sense to the situation and could have resulted in me losing $9k had Navy Federal not been completely awesome about everything. Hopefully, I won't run into anything like this again after switching my account to Navy Federal. I would add that, when this branch was still an NBSC, most of the employees knew me and I knew them and I could not have imagined this ever happening with them. Kudos to Navy Federal. We need more common sense in the world nowadays.

Misleading customers with false information. We went there to pay vehicle taxes and ask specifically, if I could take my receipt to the dmv to get my tags and the teller replied yes. When I tried, I got turned away because it wasn’t updated in the system. It has been a week and I just now got the paid confirmation. If I would have known, I would have just paid online and waited the 24 hours. Apparently the bank is considered the “middle man” and they lied.
