When is three feet really three feet?
Apparently, when it's twenty feet.
At no point did I get closer than three feet to any exhibit, and I know that because my arm is three feet, and I couldn't even observe artwork without someone constantly hovering.
With every one-star review complaining about the staff, the museum excuses it by saying they're trained in surveillance.
Well, train them better. They're docents, not cops. And they suck at understanding the concept of three feet.
Or better yet, put down colored tape. Put up bulletproof glass. For the love of God, get the staff to BACK OFF, or you'll be sure to keep seeing one-star reviews, and I'll be sure to NEVER bring my guests here.
You have a clear and consistent problem that you've proved unwilling to address.
Learn to fire people, and learn what three feet is.
9/27/24 UPDATE: A bunch of low reviews from people who say the staff constantly hovered and harassed them?
Oh, man. That's crazy. Who could have predicted?
Oh, wait. I did. Months ago.
Fix the incompetence. Your excuses mean nothing.

I would have given this museum a 5 star but honestly the experience was horrible due to Thomas. The fact that he was touching the individuals in my group(although they were not close) including myself to stay away from the art(I was close, I'll admit) However, I kept trying to move and here he was touching my arm. Honestly telling me was enough, but having to touch me was a big NO! I kept my composure due to my group. It felt like walking on thin ice the way he kept moving back and forth to track us like a hawk. We left earlier than expected. Ellen was the only person who made this experience well, with her knowledge and the way she interacted with the group was lovely.

Our visit was a while back, but I pulled up the site for a friend who was planning to be in the area and was reminded of our horrible experience. After reading other reviews from visitors with similar experiences I am compelled to support them. The collection is "okay." I didn't expect the Met. But I've been to the Met...with my son...and we were never treated like potential criminals and vandals at other museums. We were literally blocked from entering one of the galleries. When we would try to move to another area, a "security guard" would intentionally stand in our path to redirect us back towards the door. Condescending warnings when we'd "lean in to close" to examine details and read placards. It's really the strangest and most uncomfortable place I've ever been. There is no joy in this museum. You can hear a pin drop because everyone is just quiet and uncomfortable and afraid they will get in trouble. And I know the museum will respond to this review with "Sorry about your experience, but our guards are highly trained to protect the collection, etc. etc." Whatevs. Plenty of comments just like mine so clearly there is an inherent issue here.
The place is empty because word has probably spread. It's creepy and weird and you get followed like you are being stalked. I relayed my experience and my friend who also read similar reviews and they are going to skip this museum on their trip.

The art shown was very uninteresting and the bigger security? Llady was very rude came storming from across the room because she thought we were touching stuff caused a whole scene for nothing.

I loved the art but I am disappointed there’s no description of the paintings. Only the name of the painter, date, and a placard for whomever donated the piece (which I think is so tacky without providing information about the art).

It's pretty basic. The worst part was leaving. My group walked to the museum but decided to Uber back to our hotel. Our driver didn't get a parking ticket when pulling in, and when we tried to leave the gate lady was so rude. She charged us $4 to be picked up by an Uber. Admission is free to the museum but parking costs. It's not really worth the hassle.

A great museum but do not attempt to take your children here. We took a small group of home schoolers and were treated like we might be trying to rob the place. The staff constantly hovered over us so we toured one floor and left. I know not all children are well behaved but we were not causing a bit of trouble. It was an unfortunate experience.

Free but donations appreciated. Exhibits on 3rd and 4th floors. 1st pic is my favorite as I love the colors. Enjoyed looking around!

I had an exceptional experience at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Not only does this museum beautifully showcase local and regional art, but it also impresses with its ability to bring in major exhibits from across the world. The dedication to promoting both local talent and global artistic expression is truly commendable. Walking through the galleries, I was captivated by the diverse range of artworks on display, each telling a unique story and reflecting the richness of human creativity. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to Greenville, this museum is a must-visit for anyone with an appreciation for art and culture. Highly recommend exploring the captivating exhibitions at the Greenville County Museum of Art.

Walking through the museum's grand entrance, I was immediately captivated by the array of art and artifacts on display. Each exhibit seemed to tell a unique story, drawing me deeper into its narrative. As I wandered through the halls, I found myself transported through time and space, from ancient civilizations to modern masterpieces. The museum's curated collection sparked my imagination and ignited my curiosity, leaving me in awe of the beauty and creativity of human expression. It was a truly unforgettable experience, one that left me inspired and enriched.

Lots of potential to be a great museum, but had a odd experience. I’ve visited museums in many US cities and abroad and never been corrected by the staff so many times. The lack of descriptions below the art is frustrating as well. Again, never been to an art museum without them. Essential to understanding the artist’s intention and meaning. I had to look up every piece on Google, which took away from the whole reason I was there, which was to experience art in real life. When we asked the staff if we could request for those during the remodel, they said just to submit a comment online.

My first stop on every visit to Greenville is the Museum of Art. I love this Museum -- the Wyeth collection, the continual offerings by South Carolina artists, and on this visit, a unique 3-D and more display (I loved "Emma and Arthur".) Further, the staff is welcoming, friendly and professional. I always look forward to my next visit!

Unacceptable behavior from staff made our visit uncomfortable. Over the years, have been to many museums from Florida to Washington State and I have never had a bad experience. From the beginning the guy at the desk was friendly but made sure we KNEW the rules before we entered. Once we went to the third floor we were watched like we were going to steal or deface the art. We get to the next section and the guy in that area would not even let us read the card about the art piece. We were literally 3 feet away and bent in a little to read a card(art piece was in a glass enclosure) and we were told to back up. After this happened multiple times we choose to leave at that point because we were not able to view the art in a peaceful manner. The staff made this exciting day planned miserable and uncomfortable. We will NEVER go back to this museum. To the artist or owners that own the art, please consider relocating your art to a museum that will allow the community to enjoy your art.

CHILDREN ARE NOT WELCOME, MATTER OF FACT, NO ONE IS! I wish I'd read the reviews more thoroughly before waisting our time here. Over the past 4-5 years, reviews have stated that it's not a welcoming environment and the staff is obtrusive. They were blatantly staring us down as they followed us the entirety of the 15 minutes we visited. After this very short period of time, we gave up, knowing we were not welcome and left. This was an opportunity to teach children and adults alike to explore and admire the works of art. Instead it was an opportunity to learn about intrusiveness, lack of tact, and stereotypes. Either way, I suppose we can learn from all experiences, good or bad. This, unfortunately, was a very bad one. We will never return here. I'm very glad we do have fond memories and experiences at other art museums. Otherwise, after this, we'd probably give up on art museums completely.
