From Hanover House
Hanover House, one of the oldest homes in South Carolina, operates as an historic house museum, located in the South Carolina Botanical Garden. Although built in Berkeley County, Hanover House was moved to Clemson College's campus in 1941.
Hanover House, built in 1716 for French Huguenot Paul de St. Julien, likely by enslaved African laborers, was primarily a rice plantation named by the St. Julien family to honor George I, Elector of Hanover, for his assistance to French Huguenots in fleeing France after the 1685 Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
