We love magnolia plantation! So much to see here. A must see in the charleston area. Hours can be spent exploring the gardens and the swamps.

The zoo was depressing, borderline post-apocalyptic. Reptiles kept in full shade/no way to bask in the sun or supplemental heat. Half the enclosures were empty. Greenhouses were employees only.

Very nice walking trails. The home was not real impressive.

So I really have mixed feelings about this place given the history of slavery in the United States. It is a beautiful place there is absolutely no doubting that. The original family still owns the property and runs it as a business doing tours and such. It's well maintained it's very pretty. But I wonder what horrors transpired during its original existence as a rice plantation. I did learn a lot about the plantation and the tour guide was very sympathetic to the past. I definitely think it's worth going to to understand the history behind the plantation. It is part of our country's history, so it should not be erased. But it shouldn't be celebrated

Great tour and information. Did the train and the house tours and both were excellent. Thanks to Millie for bringing the past alive.

Beautiful gardens.. BUT to many weddings were going on, which were not posted anywhere, we didn't want to intrude on "their" day so missed out on see a good portion of the main grounds. Good news your ticket is good for a year, but we were in town for the weekend.

This is a plantation with slave houses and the oldest gardens open to the public. I particularly liked the gardens and there was a lot to see, including countless bridges. The Auduban Swamb Garden (black water cypress and tupelo swamp) is also worth it as it is absolutely not overcrowded (at least in September 2024) and local animals can be observed. Ok, the alligators weren't my thing and they looked really scary, so I walked a step faster.
Unfortunately, the house can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which I learn a lot about the house itself and its residents, but over time I simply know too much, especially when I visit other plantations. It's best to be there right at the beginning of opening hours and do the guided tour of the house first, as relatively few guests take part at that time.

Employees can do BETTER. The Gardens were very beautiful for this time of year. My issue was with the grounds 3 works who spent at least 20 plus minutes while I had bought food at the snack restaurant to enjoy; parked the golf cart beside our picnic table to throw another employee under the bus about everything and were still talking about it loudly through the whole time I was trying to enjoy my food and company of my family. We went on the tram ride next which was informative. Then to the gift shop last were the to older ladyies working at the cash register couldn't stop talking again about another employee and everything she did wrong. We were never greeted or acknowledge, left without buying anything because workers was so annoying. My issue is WORKERS do BETTER. Whether your getting paid or volunteering do your job and quit downing other employees in front of paying customers that support your job. It was really sad to see such people so unhappy.

A lot of fun and rich history of the deep south in the 18th and 19th century. Worth a visit.
