The Mrs. and I spent an August week at the Inn. It is a special property that I've seen go through decades of evolution which continues to this day. The new owners have paid a lot of attention to decor, atmosphere and serving guests. The property is charming with outdoor fire pits, Adirondack chairs and hammocks in a variety of quiet places for reading, sunning or anything else.
Our room (in the Barn) was small and suffered from high humidity that was hardly remedied by a portable hall dehumidifier. An AC unit was installed in a hallway window the day before we checked out. I expect it will have a positive influence.
Our smaall room lacked chairs - just two good-sized square cushion seats. The dank smell of moisture was continuous despite a working AC unit. The shower was excellent and the bed was comfy. Larger rooms with more ameniites (fire place/balcony, etc.) are available.
Staff around the Inn were all polite and helpful, setting out a reasonable and free continental breakast every moring and answering all varieties of questions. Laid back as much as the Inn is, the staff were stretched between manning the front desk and managing the dining room in the mornings.
Restaurant menu items are varied and well prepared. Delicious fish dishes led to a fine dining experience at reasonable pricing. Servers were very attentive as well.
I had my own transportation but can assure you the private shuttle service from the Inn to the private Shelter Harbor Beach is worth a lot, if that's something you value.
Room rental rates are very competitive among like shore lodging establishments. It's a good choice if you're up for a unique property in a great part of Rhode Island.

Our experience was similar to other reviews. We expected an upscale inn and that was not our experience. On the positive side, the shuttle to the Weekapaugh Beach is a true benefit of staying at the Inn and Mark, our driver, was great and very professional. Our room was as very disappointing, with a heavy, musty order that disrupted our sleep. The air conditioner was old and noisy, and did not ventilate well. The shower also was in need of a facelift and there were minimal towels provided. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast good, I hope the Inn can upgrade their accommodations to justify the price charged.
Noteworthy details: Beach shuttle is a great amenity.

Stayed here for three nights and booked under the impression it was an upscale inn. This is what we found.
Our room was quiet and decorated nicely but the ac was extremely noisy and very difficult to control. The bed was comfortable but the tv was tiny and hard to see clear across the room. There was a frig but it was about the size of a large purse. No pen or paper. There was no housekeeping during our entire stay!
The bathroom was a huge fail. No hand towel hook, no bathroom cup, absolutely nowhere to put anything. One small towel rack, no fan to pull moisture out of the air. Worst of all the shower tiles were extremely moldy and had some sort of caulking on the shower floor that looked horrible (see photos).
The lobby and restaurant were decorated beautifully but everything was very dusty. The bathroom in the lobby was overflowing with trash and the toilet paper roll was empty.
Breakfast was self-serve and was the same thing every day. Cold eggs, bagels, yogurt, fruit and packaged cereals. Coffee consisted of a carafe instead of a tureen which constantly ran out and people had to wait for it to be refilled. You were expected to bus your own table and yet the tray where the dishes went was never cleared. There was always a mountain of dirty dishes. There seems to be a distinct lack of pride in what could be such a pretty , upscale inn. It was so unfortunate.

The rooms were musty and tired. The breakfast not so great. We couldn't wait to get home to sleep in fresh air. Such potential as this hotel is in an ideal location.
Noteworthy details: Such great potential and way too expensive for the experience. Had to change rooms twice.

Rooms: Super quiet, modern antique barn vibes
Nearby activities: Hotel shuttle to/from weekapaug beach is amazing, comes with beach chairs, towels, bags

A tough place to rate, honestly. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, building is gorgeous and the location is really convenient to Westerly and weekapaug. We also made use of the recently resurfaced tennis courts and were really impressed with the quality.
Two issues kept the rating down - one minor problem was that the kitchen was closed due to staffing shortages (not the end of the world, we were here in mid June, not peak season). The major issue was the room. Our air conditioner was extremely loud and would make an intermittent intense rattling sound even when turned off. We mentioned this to the front desk and rather than moving us they said they would take care of it while we were at dinner.
We came back to the room to find it stuffy and musty since the ac was off but we opened the windows and settled in. We were woken up six separate times during the night by the ac system - the hotel had just turned it off, not disconnected it. The exact thing we told them would not work.
Overall a place with incredible potential but after a night of noise, stale air and discomfort I have a hard time recommending it. The hotel did waive the amenity fee which takes some of the sting out, but I would really rather have gotten some sleep.

Very pricey for what you get. Is cute, quaint and the staff is super friendly but there is no view of the water (or anything), the “spa” isn’t much and has no availability, and continental breakfast consists of really bad coffee or bitter juice. The tv in the room was so small, had trouble seeing it. I can’t even understand what the added “resort fee” constitutes. This is not a resort, is an older farmhouse.

Shelter Harbor Inn is a beautiful venue perfect for small weddings as well as a quiet getaway. Really beautiful rooms and a great outdoor area as well.

We bought an overnight room package post Xmas last year to get away from the holiday madness. Just wanted to have a date night out, husband-wife, some wine, fireplace, quiet drinks, ... but things started from them giving us the room right above the kitchen! The Inn was not at capacity, they had open rooms, but they gave us the one with noises/who knows what else coming up from below. The room did NOT have a working A/C. So once the room was warmed up from the fireplace and we were ready to turn in, 1. Noises from the kitchen 2. No air. NO AIR. The room was at 85 F all night and no air. We could not sleep. Our quiet night out was ruined. Next morning at the reception when we asked they just casually shrugged saying yea we ve had some problems with air conditioning lately!!! So they knew they were giving us a room without air. Oh Just Like THAT!!!! We were freakin roasting in a noisy - kitchen-y hot boiler of a room. They did this intentionally. NO THANK YOU. I will never go there again. I do not recommend. Plenty of other Inns for a quiet night for a couple.

We had an amazing experience hosting our wedding at Shelter Harbor Inn on October 12th, 2023. Paula and her team's expertise and guidance were invaluable throughout the entire planning process. Their attention to every detail ensured that everything ran seamlessly. My husband and I could truly relax and savor every moment, knowing that they had everything under control. The food was exceptional, and the service made everyone feel well-catered to and cared for. I highly recommend to anyone to host their event at Shelter Harbor Inn!

This turn of the 18th century hotel may appear quaint however it carries the stench of asbestos and old rotten pipes. Smells very much like a harbor. Couldn't sleep through the night due to the smell, it didn't seem like our lungs were breathing that air.
