The seafood was cooked to perfection, not undercooked or overcooked however the fries, chips and rings were undercooked and greasy. The clams are not the traditional corn flour only coating so overly crunchy for my taste. Fish is wet battered. Scallops are sautéed without a coating and again not what I was expecting. Tarter sauce is homemade which is a nice surprise and maybe the coleslaw too but it was super heavy with mayonnaise. If I do go back, I will try both the red & white chowdah sand the clam cakes too.Excellent service, very accommodating and friendly.$10.00 for onion rings is a bit pricey in my opinion* Note * This place has been around for years but the original owner retired and was sold to the new owners 5 years ago

Though I grew up in Glocester, I moved away many years ago. Of all the things I miss about RI, family and food are at the top of the list, with clams (fried with bellies and clam cakes) above all other foods. So it was a real treat to stop here for some of the best fried clams and clam cakes in the area. But that was not all. After placing my order, I sat in my car listening to the radio. After a bit, I walked back up to the window and saw the sign, 'Cash Only'. Now what? I had ordered nearly $30 worth of food, and no way to pay! I apologized like crazy, feeling like a real chump, so I was more than amazed when the owner said, "No worries. Just stop by the next time you are in the area. You can pay then!" You could have knocked me over with a feather. Of course I went straight to the bank in Scituate and got the cash, but it renewed my faith in humanity. I was sure that kind of trust was gone. The food is delicious but the service is better.

Omg they have the best bacon cheddar fries ever. I have had also had the cheese burger it was delicious. I love going to the shack. I am never disappointed here. You must bring cash here however because they don't take debit or creditcards.

UPDATE:Howard's Chowder Shack closed at least two years ago. I went on their last day for one final meal. Howard and his wife moved to Florida. The people who have it now, renamed it. Howard would never put his name on the lousy food they serve. My five stars were for Howard and his wife. I did go once after it reopened with a new name and new people. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. The service, wait time and quality of the food is subpar. The menu is way too large for a place of its size. I miss the old Howard's Chowder Shack. I feel sad each time I drive past it.

After a 45 plus minute wait we ordered 6 clam cakes a bowl of red and a bowl of white and a fishermen's platter. We got clamless cakes...yes I dissected it ! Not a single calm . Tomatoy red clamless chowder or clams the size of a grain of salt. White chowder just the same with disintegrating potatoes. Fisherman's platter hugh tasteless scallops, fishy shrimp and whole bellies, where maybe 2 beneath the batter .BY FAR THE WORST SEAFOOD EVER!!
