Our recent stay at the Hotel Viking left much to be desired, especially given its reputation and premium price point.
Upon arrival, we encountered a disorganized valet experience. The valet took our car without issuing a ticket, leaving us uncertain about the process. The lack of situational awareness from the staff made it a less-than-welcoming first impression.
We discovered that the down button on the elevator was out of order, forcing us to take the stairs whenever we needed to go down. While not a major inconvenience, it was disappointing to find such a basic amenity neglected.
Our attempt to enjoy an espresso martini at the bar was similarly disappointing. The sole bartender on duty poured our drinks almost entirely as foam from the espresso machine, and served them without any indication of concern for their quality. The drink was undrinkable, and the lack of attention to detail from the bartender, along with a 20-minute wait time, left a poor impression.
On a positive note, our room was pleasant—comfortable and adequately appointed, though not exceptional. While it offered a nice stay, it did not meet the high expectations set by the hotel’s reputation.
Overall, the Hotel Viking would benefit from attention to these details. With some improvements in service, hospitality, and upkeep, it could provide a far more memorable and enjoyable experience for its guests.

The parking valets and bell service were very welcoming and helpful. They gave us great advice on local attractions and make a great first impression for this hotel. The check-in desk was also a very positive experience. We were on a nine day New England vacation, staying at a different hotel each night. Some hotels acted as if they didn’t really care if you were there or not. That was certainly not the case at Hotel Viking! The staff recommended a great restaurant because we wanted a wharf-side dining experience. The wharf is an easy 8 minute walk. Uber is also readily available in the area. Our server at the hotel breakfast was delightful and ended our stay on a high note.
Safety: We felt very safe walking in the area. We used Uber at night after dinner due to the colder, windy conditions in late October. Daytime temps were great with a light jacket.
Walkability: Easy 8 min walk to the wharf. Some shops and cafes are just across the street. In colder weather, Uber is readily available.
Food and drinks: The breakfast was delicious. The server was attentive and friendly.
Noteworthy details: Outdoor patio and rooftop dining are available in season. Although this is an historical hotel, our room was updated and didn’t feel cramped.

Really not good. The one good thing was the mattress was very comfortable but… On arrival had to unload my own bags from our car, find a luggage trolley and bring the loaded trolley into the lobby. No robes in our room even though we called ahead specifically to ask for robes. Handicapped accessible room with all the towel and robe hooks at wheel chair height so even if I wanted to use the robe I didn’t get, it would have dragged across the floor. The room sink vanity was tiny and couldn’t be used be 2 people at the same time. Also, could only have hot or cold water at the sink, not both at the same time. Both mornings I started my shower with hot water but then ran out after 3-4 minutes. I’ve had better accommodations in third world countries.

Came here for a wedding, have never been inside and this was my first time. When I was younger and threw my years had always wanted to come inside and check it out. Such an amazing hotel in Newport. The food at the reception was delicious I wish I had brought a plate to go. ?

I took a star off because of a lack of safety measures in the bathroom. A person does not need to be handicapped in order to want grap bars in tub/shower .one simple hand bar would be nice to have while stepping into a tub shower, a tub that had a slippery bottom and no rubber mat. Staff esp.the valet service ,and food were excellent . This was only window in our suite of 2 rooms! Your architect should have been fired for this design.

There was a horrific smell in the hallway leading up to our room and in the room itself. What can only be described as what you would expect to smell in a nursing home from musty old urine and feces that has seeped into upholstery and carpeting. This made my stay extremely unpleasant. Also the bathroom is so so tiny there is barely any room to turn around and it makes no sense that the toilet and shower are in one room and the sink is separate in its own room across the hall. It’s so cramped and uncomfortable that every time you have to use the restroom you have to go in a different room across the hall to wash your hands. I wouldn’t have been as upset with this hotel if it wasn’t for the horrific and steep price we paid. I can’t believe our room was about $600 absolutely not worth it at all. The staff is terrible I feel like no one paid attention to me. I tried to call the hotel several times prior to arrival and no one ever picks up the phone. When I expressed my concerns to the staff about the smell of the room they really didn’t seem to care at all. They gave me a robotic “I’m so sorry to hear that” and didn’t do anything about it. Would’ve appreciated being offered to be switched to a different room at least or even trying to see if something else was available. I’m just horrified at how expensive this hotel is for the disgusting and outdated rooms and lackluster service. For $600 a night I simply expect better. Would never ever stay here again.

Overall, the hotel does not meet our expectations. While the Viking Hotel staff provided outstanding service during our three-night visit, the historic property is significantly aged due to its heritage status and requires quite significant renovations. The bathroom drain was sluggish, and the shower control handle was unstable. Moreover, the pick-up and drop-off area in front of the Viking Hotel is limited in size and tends to become congested easily. If you have claustrophobia or dislike crowds, this may be a challenging situation for you.

Honestly, it’s a little better than a fancy Howard Johnson and my small room I can barely fit in for 3 days costs more than my rent for a month . The AC or room conditioner device ? have no idea why it keeps turning on and I can’t turn it off and it sounds like a jet engine. The staff acted like I should just be happy I’m here and deal with it. Oh it also costs 45 dollars a day to park “valet” but it’s just a parking lot you should be able to park in behind the place because you are staying here and I just killed a centipede in my bed. The hotel bartenders are wearing hoodies, slow, and lacked any professionalism you would expect from a place that charges as much as it does.

Amazing location walking distance to popular spots. Friendly hotel staff, convenient cafe for coffee and pastries, easy, friendly valet. Bathrooms outdated but otherwise room was clean and comfy. Outdoor firepits were a nice touch.

As one of the oldest hotels in Rhode Island, USA, your hotel's service is really disappointing. Aren't you embarrassed?
First of all, the hotel does not provide toiletries, which is simply a basic requirement for a star-rated hotel. Secondly, even bathrobes and slippers are not provided, which really makes me feel worse than many Airbnbs.
What’s even more irritating is that the customer service staff at the lobby enthusiastically told me “our rooftop bar opens at 10pm”, but when I went there after 7pm, the bar staff said it would close at 8pm. What the customer service said in the lobby is completely inconsistent with the actual situation. I have to question your management. The reason given by the bar customer service was "the weather is a bit cold", but the temperature that day was clearly 79 degrees, which was not cold at all. Business is slow on Monday, so that’s not a reason to close early, right?
I even told the bar customer service that I would be there before 8 o'clock in order to rush back to the bar to order a meal. They agreed, but when I returned to the bar I found the door locked. Although a staff member appeared after knocking on the door, he only said that this was the hotel's policy and would not let me in. Is your boss so indifferent to customers and profits?
This kind of service attitude makes me speechless. Giving you one star is considered tolerant. If I could, I'd really like to give it a negative star rating. I hope your hotel will take the customer experience seriously and not disappoint you.

Walkability: You the cliff walk is close by and id well worth a visit. Lots of shops and cafe near by.
Food and drinks: Rooftop bar was great. Nice drink menu and lots of fire pits. Lobster was excellent and so was the cod.

I have never posted a negative review but this hotel was so unexpectedly bad, I feel compelled to. Despite booking the hotel 8 months in advance, I wound up with one of the worst rooms in the hotel. The room I was in should not be rented to anyone - especially at over $500/night (including fees). The only windows in the room were 5 and a half feet off the ground so unless you are at least 6 feet tall, you can't see out. Even if you can see out you're looking at a roof with rusty air conditioners. The ceilings were low so it felt like I was sleeping in a basement. The bathroom is tiny - only the length of the bathtub with a tiny toilet. All of the fixtures and tiles are the cheapest you can buy. In the shower, it looks like they ran out of slightly off-white tiles so just had patches of bright white tiles in two corners. The moldings are thin and cheap and the unit looked like it was painted by a high school student. The bathroom fan sounded like a jet engine. There was also only about a foot of space to hang clothes and that was shared with an ironing board. There were only two small drawers of total storage space for clothes. The furniture was an odd replica style that just looked cheap and was nonfunctional. Even the bedding and bed skirt were really cheap. I have stayed in better budget motels. The service was also lacking especially in the roof-top bar where there was only one bartender. There was a way to share feedback while enabling wifi so I did but no one responded. This was the worst hotel experience I have ever had (in over 40 years of travel.)
