Norman Bird Sanctuary is a beautiful preserve in Middletown with extensive hiking trails, picturesque views, and excellent wildlife viewing. I went there for a hike on Wednesday afternoon, and stumbled onto their Wednesday Walks event, which was great because I got a guided tour of the sanctuary AND got free entry. The employees seem very passionate about their work, and offer a lot of group events especially for youth. I look forward to coming back and exploring more!

Best nature walk in RI. The trails are well maintained and range from easy/moderate to challenging and both offer excellent views and lots of natural beauty and wildlife.

WOW! Stumbled upon this place thanks to my local library. I first want to say the staff here is amazing. They were kind and helpful. They are also all passionate about the place which is nice to see. The price you pay to go here is well worth it. There is TONS of different options depending on hiking level you are looking for. The pond was wonderful to sit by. They have a lot of programs and events as well. Defiantly recommend a visit.

Excellent birding with hiking trails for all level of difficulty. I highly recommend the Hanging Rock Trail. Provides excellent views of the water.

Visited the sanctuary to get is some hiking and see the birds. We batted .500. There a e a number of lovely paths that range from mild to rather strenuous. The ones up on the ridges are challenging and we had to scamper over rocks and walk on some knife-edged shale outcroppings. The scenery was lovely and there were not a lot of people around.
Unfortunately, there were also almost no birds at the bird sanctuary. We saw a random seagull, a few Canada geese, and a handful of house sparrows (all birds we see in our neighborhood). We did have a close encounter with a couple of deer, but the lack of wildlife was admittedly disappointing.
Go for the hiking and know that here may or may not be birds or other wildlife to see.

I’m going to lead off with our slight problem here since this info may help someone else - the trail distances, as far as I can tell, are EACH way, not round trip. I don’t think the map makes it clear for an out and back trail like Hanging Rock and unfortunately, whether via misunderstanding or knowledge gap, I received incorrect info today when I asked at the visitor desk several minutes after 4pm with two young kids in tow if the Hanging Rock trail was one mile round trip or each way, and was told one mile was the round trip distance and that we had plenty of time to make it there and back by 5pm (we did not). The rest of her info regarding trail route and warning some difficulty to the hike was accurate, at least - there really is quite some rock scrambling with drop offs to either side so I’d only do it if you feel pretty sure footed. The trails we took are maintained well but I thought could be marked better especially there are some unlabeled splits. Would have liked to visit with more time to explore in a relaxed fashion and bet it would be prettier in a few weeks with some more green. Worth checking out but triple check the trail distances if that matters to you.

Visiting the area in October and our intent was to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors by walking the trails. We learned when we arrived on a Wednesday afternoon that a 1 hour tour was just about to begin and so we joined it. So glad we did. Still enjoyed the trails but also learned about the local plants and enjoyed the company of the others on the tour. Great place to visit.

Beautiful walking/hiking trails with a variety of scenery. I didn't mind paying to hike the trails as they were well manicured and offered great scenic views. The staff were very friendly and helpful as well. Nice area to picnic before entering as well. Chickens and gardens in front were great to view. Lovely little spot and so glad I stopped in.
