The veterinarians and vet techs are incredible, efficient, empathetic, and are very thorough with animal care *but* the blonde with the glasses at the front desk is kind of cringe and has an attitude that should get her to question other job positions.
I’ve been here twice and even the first time the person with me commented that the attitude at the front desk seemed “off” and this time was confirmatory.
People are bringing their pets here, spending thousands of dollars, and possibly going through a crisis whether emotional or financial and so the least ocean state can do in return is get people who are friendly *enough* and treat people like humans to serve as the face of the emergency room.

Very disappointed with the service this place use to be great. And people were helpful and caring. Not sure if owners or management changed. But I would never go there again. Spent 5 hrs there. And $850 and watched 12 other pets come in a leave. Before. Anyone would even look at my cat who was in respertory. Distress. All without. No communication. Ask the girls at the desk several times to get us a doctor and get an update, but they were too busy socializing After four hours, they said your pet is next in line to be seen After 5 hours. We said, give us back our cat and we will go elsewhere They gave us back. The cat still charge $850 for services they did not perform. They should be ashamed and embarrassed along with the owner of this place for hiring such incompetent people maybe it’s just the night shift because I had a better experience three weeks prior with the dayshift people With another animal

When our Rottweiler, Kira, was diagnosed with lymphoma we weren’t sure treatment was going to be an option for her as she’s not the best patient. The oncology team at Ocean State reassured us that they can treat all kinds of personalities. They loved on Kira from day one and didn’t even need to use sedation for her chemo administration! We got 8 great bonus months with our girl before we had to say goodbye. Forever thankful to the oncology team!

They’ll brought my dogs in on a gurney, I waited four hours before they sent me away with my dogs even worse than how they went in. Bleeding, swollen, and no medical care rendered.
Place should be shut down. Sorry excuse for a vet.

My dog had been experiencing vomiting for three days with zofran, prilosec, and a bland diet. I called ahead of time at 10am, got my dog there at 1124am The "triage" was listening to breath sounds, no temp taken And we were told to wait, someone will be with him. Three hours later, still hasn't moved up the chart at all.
Should have known to just leave then. Another patient had been there since 9am, simlier things and was not even assigned a doc until 1pm, bernese mountain dog, and then they sat in the exam room for yet another 45 minutes. Reception stated that there are 17 doctors working, so none of them can quickly check out a sick dog? It states online that there is an urgent care open through the er side, who was running that?
Reception is ok with it taking HOURS for a sick pet to be seen? They are the ones whole told me to bring my dog in for a possible blockage. You would think that would help him to be seen. Nope. Same with this other dog, great dane, who developed a lump on his neck over night and was referred by their vet to come see you. Even people hospitals at least do the basics at triage and at least get something going.
How does the staff find this acceptable? How do the owners go through and chastise the other pet owners who point out the issues? Why do they they turn around and tell us, "I'm sorry you feel that way" instead of let me find out or let me see where they are at?

We have been with OS since 1999 when we brought our first Devon Rex cat KoKo, and apologies if I have not put a 5 star review by now.
Our precious Devon Rex Tigger has been with this hospital since arriving to us since 2011.
He has multiple medical issues , including being born with one kidney, IBD, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc... This beyond amazing hospital full of compassionate ER, receptionists, and the most wonderful Specialty Vet on this planet known as Dr Sarah Crain has given our Tigger the best care we could ever hope for.
She loves him, and can see it her eyes.?
In fact, Our 13 yr year old boy was saved 3 times by this hospital.
The first time, he had a stroke just short of 7 years old.
The second time , we were in for a checkup with Dr Crain, and all of a sudden, his kidney values went in a dangerous direction.
She told us, need to admit him. Has to be watched, tested, etc...
He remained so well cared for, as we prayed we wouldn't lose him.
This Summer, after a tooth extraction , we had to rush him immediately to OS, as he became hypoglycemic . He was crashing fast, and there was a receptionist on that night Aug 26th 2024 that I must commend with her immediate attention to contacting ER, and saying, we hsve a cat crashing out here.
Had it not been for her, all the staff, his nurse I'm not sure we would have our Tigger beside us today.
All I can say is, thank you, keep up all your hard work in running truly the best veterinary hospital in RI.
Last, but not least, it is the most comforting feeling to be able to come and visit with Tigger, when he has had to stay, and until we could get there, it was so nice of someone to take a photo of him and e-mail it to us.

Despite paying thousands of dollars for care, they misdiagnosed my pet and didn’t share key info with our primary care vet. I know there aren’t a lot of options for emergency vet care after normal hours, but if you can, go somewhere else. P

I spent 5 hours waiting to be seen and was never seen From 3pm to 8pm. I brought my rabbit in to be check due to him limping. Every person after me was treated and able to go home with their pet. I even had my child with me. No one updated me. I was told, if an urgent situation comes through the door you would have to continue to wait. Which I thought first come first serve, but apparently it’s a life or death situation at this hospital. Before I even arrived at the hospital I was informed that I would have to call a Before I even arrived at the hospital I was informed that I would have to call an hour before arrival to let them know that I’m bringing in my rabbit. This was not fair because my rabbit could not walk and they didn’t care to check on him. I walked out at 740pm, they called my phone to inform me that I’m ready to be placed in a room and seen.. They placed me in a room and left me there for 20min more. I asked when will I be seen I was informed again. They have an urgent situation and will take care of me after that animal was situated. So I walked out after 5 hours of waiting, with no answers and no one saw my rabbit. Never again will I come here!!!

The best place in the area for after hour emergencies. We brought our cat Mort in when he suddenly became violently ill. The staff went above and beyond to treat him in a timely manner, as well as keep us informed and updated regarding his care. We were immediately greeted by the front desk staff where a kind tech promptly took mort in the back to begin treatment. Our vet was very caring and compassionate. She took the extra step when it came to explaining what was going on, and the follow up care that will be needed. Thank you for all your help with Morty.

This place had no empathy or compassion for the care of my dog. All they cared about was the money. I brought my pregnant dog who was in labor that a had a hard time passing her second pup. They told me she would need a C-section which would’ve cost $4-$6k. I was told that it was either a C-section or euthanasia. Lucky my dog passed her second pup. I was told to bring her home and monitor her as they were hopeful she could pass the rest. She ended up having two more but there was still one inside her that she was having trouble pushing out. I was absolutely not bringing her back to Ocean state so I called another emergency vet and they took us in right away!!! They were compassionate and really cared about the well-being of their patients, not the money. They gave her a shot of oxytocin and she passed her last pup within five mins! Ocean state never even offered the shot, just went straight to the alternative that would give them the most money. I definitely learned my lesson and will never bring my animals back to ocean state.

UPDATE: The staff NEVER OFFERED ME A SIDE ENTRANCE; I REQUESTED THIS SEVFERAL TIMES. THEY CAN SAY THEY DO NOT TOLERATE ADJECTIVES RELATED TO THEIR EMPLOYEES BUT THEY ALSO DO NOT EMPLOY COMPENTANT OR POLITE STAFF, NO APOLOGY HERE i SAID WHAT I SAID ITS ALL FACTUAL. THE PLACE IS A DANGER TO PETS ... THE END
This has to be the worst operation, I called ahead, spoke with a tech and vet, who said while not an emergency my dog had to be seen for a culture and wound clean. (He snuck out in middle of the night fought something) so I brought my German Shepard here. He is a typical GS. Loves people, adores kids; reactive to animals especially dogs.
Not our first trip to a vet. I inform the desk, the person on the phone earlier, they both were like yeah wait in your car until there is a room we get it.
Fast forward a very rude young man calls my car insisting I bring my reactive 95lbs of pure muscle dog into a crowed waiting area with dogs, cats, etc.
i reiterate my dog is too reactive why we are in the car, do you have a side door… exasperated and condescendingly with a huff Im told to bring her in ? Its a he, and “she” will handle it,
I again state I am not comfortable.
NO OTHER VET OR GROOMER HAS EVER HAD AN ISSUE THEY HAVE ALWAYS HAD ME WAIT IN THE CAR, they either use a separate entrance to safely bring my dog in, or clear the waiting room, walk him quickly through.
ALL OTHER PLACES HAVE A PROTOCOL FOR SAFETY.
Well out marches a pink haired brat, with an attitude. Repeating so this is not an emergency, to which we are now trapped in the vestibule at the front, where animals and people are passing. I'm getting angry for the dangerous position we are in. They were neglectful. Rude,
It was their staff who told me to bring him.
So I did, the girl has no business working with animals or people.
My dog has never had an incident because I am a good pet parent. I do not take chances.
They put my dog and others at risk
The place was overcrowded and dirty.
I left. I will not put $1000 of dollars in the pockets of such low end care, low quality staff.
Im reporting them. Left a dog with a bad infection untreated. In some high school drop out’s opinion he was not an emergency , well your vet felt different. I drove 2 hours from mass.
Place is chaotic disorganized and I will never go back!

I called today to bring my cat Wally in because I was concerned that he had worms. The person who I spoke with on the phone was so compassionate and caring and took all of my concerns seriously. Every staff member I encountered was thorough and kind and they sent me home with medicine and very clear instructions as to how to treat him. I am so thankful that they took my concerns seriously and treated my kitty like he was one of their own.

To say I am grateful for the folks at OSVS would be an understatement. As someone who works in the vet med field I had a scare with my personal pet. My dog Buddy was referred to OSVS for a specialty operation & the team saved his life. From the minute we walked into the building, overnight & the following day during treatment & the operation I was informed by the team & doctors of what steps they were taking. I was able to come visit & keep in the loop of his care. You are all true hero’s & we are so beyond thankful for the exceptional care Buddy received. Shoutout to Dr. Hallowell you are incredible, Lance for sending email updates/ photos & all the the speciality team members & nurses who’s names I do not know, thank you! Thank you for making a very scary situation so peaceful, you are all INCREDIBLE & truly genius for the tricky operation you had to perform. Buddy is on the mend & happy to be home breathing comfortably again. ❤️❤️
