York Ice Arena is one of the nicest rinks around, a great icebox and a fantastic facility for kids. The ice quality is genuinely impressive, smooth as glass and maintained beautifully, with high ceilings that ensure rightful ice condition. The rink is much better taken care of than others in the area. It is well-run with friendly staff. The heated locker rooms are a godsend, providing a warm, spacious refuge for gear changes, and there is a good amount of space to put skates on. The stands have a la carte heating. Coaches are enthusiastic, patient, and clearly know their stuff. For public skating, the line is not too long and there is a mid-way break for the Zamboni to resurface the ice, though the ice can get chunky at the end of a session. The rental skates are noted as not sharp. A significant drawback is that the stands are very cold, and the designated smoking area immediately outside the main entrance causes the smell of smoke to fill the lobby. The concession stand is also considered expensive. Overall, it is a great rink with great ice, but visitors should dress very warmly.
