I lived in the area for several years while in Pittsburgh and went here pretty consistently throughout. The gym was clean, well-maintained, reasonably-priced, and the staff were incredibly friendly--all 5 of my other housemates went as well and they would attest to this. You really could not ask for more from a family-owned & operated neighborhood gym, and if you are in Shadyside I would highly, highly recommend. They were also doing some pretty serious renovations/updates over the last year that I was there.

I was a member of the X for many years while living in Shadyside. The owners, John and Dana, are extremely wonderful people along with all of the staff there. They’ve built a gym that makes everyone and anyone feel comfortable 24/7. The gym equipment is phenomenal and I’ll always have X Shadyside as my #1 recommendation to anyone looking for a gym in the nearby area.

Love X Shadyside! It is neat and clean, the staff is friendly, and the range of machines and equipment available is great. The equipment is well-maintained and in excellent condition. They've got big front windows, which is super important for me since I prefer natural light and try to avoid gyms that feel too dim. I def recommend this gym to anyone in the Shadyside area!

Lovely gym that has all the essentials and more. Great location for a post-workout walk or coffee in the neighborhood. The staff and owners are friendly and always took the time say hello and ask how I was doing. Would recommend for serious gym goers, students, and aspiring lifters alike.

I was a member at this gym for 2 years and loved it! Spacious workout facility with great equipment in the Shadyside neighbor. Ownership, plus all staff, were more than friendly everyday I was in there. No need to think twice about joining here, you'll love it!

I hate to say this, because the onsite staff is so great, but please stay away from this gym. The owners and business side of this gym are very bad community members. While you get the "you can't cancel your membership" from almost all gyms, this company is extremely aggressive and predatory in their practices. It seems one of their primary source of income is from people that don't use the facility. I had to lie and say I was moving to finally get them to fully cancel my membership (after they had already taken an extra month of course via procrastination on their part). This was a full nearly 60 day process until it was settled.Additionally, reading through the comments from "the owner" below in response to legitimate issues, and there willingness to air out bad laundry just to defend their status; seems to support a lot of the negative reviews. They seem more interested in keeping their appearance up and slighting real concerns than actually addressing the issue with their business model.Just be educated before you buy. This is a purchase like anything else and make sure you do your research.

The owner has tried to delete this review before, for all the support it received. He's lied in his response before as well, using lies, malice, and unprofessional language. Here's my review:Don't sign up for this gym! My experience with the management has been the following. After asking to cancel my membership with the front desk, they recommended I pause my membership for the next month, making it clear that my membership would not resume afterwards without my go-ahead. What instead happened was that they did resume my membership a month later without my go-ahead, and charged me for 6 months while I had no clue. When asking to get a refund once I’d realized the error 6 months later, they claimed it was my fault, telling me an employee would never say those words, and that they had a right to my money.I very much recommend going to LA Fitness (6 minutes away) instead, which is far more economical, possessing more, and better equipment paired with a cheaper membership. They allow 2 extra guests and have a basketball court, in addition to free parking for several hours. They also have longer hours.I've heard great things about the Fitness Factory and JCC too after posting about this, try those as well! This doesn’t need to be said, but always check carefully for subscriptions on your bills. Don’t be dense like I was.Long story, if you're interested:After calling the front desk repeatedly and sending an email regarding getting charged for 6 months unknowingly, I got a response over email, which was short and refused to refund me my money. I then sent an email to them, with no response for a month. Once I sent an email making it clear that I would make this experience with them public by sending a screenshot of a potential review I’d post, they reached out almost immediately, setting up a call. On the call, I was accused of "making threats", and that I was unable to "meet at a medium", and that they should be "getting something out of it”, despite me of course never having attended the gym once during those 6 months. They blamed me for not checking my credit cards for 6 months, akin to a scammer blaming someone who was scammed for not being more careful with their accounts. They (I won't name who, as I'd prefer not to out them publicly), stated that reviews simply didn’t impact them, and that they were just trying to make amends. By the end of the call, they revealed their true intentions, asking me hypothetically if I’d be willing to "post a good review" before getting a refund, which I had offered to do in my previous email if I'd gotten a refund, meaning that they did care about their reviews. They then offered half of the refund 2 days later if I posted a positive review (feeling entitled to the other half of my money with no explanation), insisting that I wasn't able to meet in the middle (this is money that they took without ever having to put in any effort or work for, and money they could give back without any effort). They told me they might've given me the full refund if I hadn't sent a "threat" and that they couldn't trust me, conveniently ignoring the handful of times I'd reached out politely before, leading them to either not follow up, or give a curt response denying any responsibility, and offering not even a portion of a refund. What only got their attention, and an actual response, was the mention of posting this experience publicly. Out of principle I refused to take the half refund, stating adamantly that I'd post the bad review if I didn't get my full refund, and would only post a good review if I did.Similar to the way my call with them went, I fully expect their response to blame this on me, in part or in entirety. Nonetheless, X Shadyside is a gym that refuses to take accountability, and happily takes money away for free. Don't sign up for this scam of a business that pretends out of entitlement and self-righteousness that they have a right to your money, even if it isn’t earned ho

I came here almost every day for the summer and it was everything I needed. The space was clean and never too crowded and all the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend X over any other commercial gym in the area!

I went to Shadyside X for two months. It got the job done, however, has its downfalls. First, the gym's signs are odd. For instance, one of the "turf rules" states: " If there is a group training session happening within the room...can you guess what you should do?... That's right wait until it's over or find another area to exercise." There's a much simpler and grammatically correct way to write this--The turf room is closed when a group training session is in process. The rest of this review will be written in the gym's condescending vein. So, if you have a report that complains about dead bugs on the windowsills, guess what you should do? That's right, clean them. Every window sill in this gym has dead bugs on it. On top of that, the gyms cleanliness is questionable. That's because the cleaning is mostly done by the members.Second, the placement of some equipment is questionable. For instance, both flat Bech presses are located in an area where there is a lot of foot traffic. This is a big no. Pretty obvious why, but if I have to explain--it's dangerous. Additionally, the equipment is outdated; machine parts are missing; and both row machines are far from operable: one machine's settings do not work, the other is like riding a wooden rollercoaster--bumpy.Nevertheless, the staff is friendly and its location is convenient. Probably wouldn't have gone here if I had a car.

This gym is INCREDIBLE! Large assortment of machines, plenty of mirrors, several free weight areas, clean facility, a large turfed area where you can take all the space you need, plenty of natural lighting, safe location of the city, and the staff and members are really awesome people. I cannot recommend it enough! Also, it is family owned and operated, so I've loved supporting the local business over some of the large franchises.

The gym is located in a peace street, easy to find. Not a lot of people, so you can always use equipment without waiting for any minutes. Equipments are very professional and enough for any fitness purpose. Staff are very nice, they always say have a good night everytime when I leave away. Highly recommend!

My go to gym for the past 4 years. Has everything you need and it is never too busy which is awesome. Staff is always friendly and equipment is clean. One time I cut my leg and the owner immediately cleaned up my leg and made sure I was taken care of. Definitely recommend. A home away from home type of gym.

This was my first time ever going to a gym, the staff member Zach instantly made me feel welcome with amazing support. Ran me through a personal training lifting session giving advice and motivation throughout. I recommend this gym to anyone in the Shadyside or Pittsburgh area. 5 stars.
