If there were more than 5 stars I would give them! My dad and I stopped in to get some ingredients to try our hand at homemade sushi, and we had absolutely no clue where to start. A older gentleman asked if we needed any help, and we told him it was our first time making sushi. He then walked around with us through the store explaining everything, ensuring we had all the products we needed, and spent 15 minutes giving us tips. He was SO kind, and patient! Overall- great experience!

This is the first time in seven years that I have written a negative review on Google, and the rudeness of the owner, as well as his offense to other Asians, made me quite uncomfortable. It was my first visit to the store to pick up some sashimi when a male employee came over and told me that outside drink was not allowed inside the store (I was holding a coffee at the time) and asked me to put it in the corner. I had already placed it in the corner and planned to continue selecting my items. I could have accepted this if he had been polite, but he continued in a scolding tone, saying that there was a notice on the door. Come on, there were so many things posted at your entrance, was I supposed to read each one before entering? Besides, I happened to enter when someone was coming out. I held back and continued shopping, choosing the only piece of sashimi that still looked fresh, priced at $9.49, and went to check out. There was a white couple in front of me; the female employee at the counter was all smiles and very polite to them. But when it was my turn, her face turned sour as she pointed out a rule to me that credit cards were not allowed for purchases under $10. I did have cash on me, but she said I could either pay a higher price to use the card, or go buy the more expensive (but not fresh) sashimi inside. I refused and went to put the sashimi back in its place and left. The male employee followed me the whole time, as if I were a thief, and glared at me as I left. It was only after seeing Google reviews accusing them of racial discrimination that I realized they were habitual offenders.

Not a huge market but the items they do have are nice. The dango and the bento boxes are delicious!

EXTREMELY RUDE OWNERS!!!I had an unsettling experience at this local Japanese supermarket run by an elderly couple. My purchase was small: three boxes of beef slices, two jars of seasoning, and a bento box. After seeing a friendly exchange between old lady at the counter and the customer before me, I was taken aback by the abrupt change in demeanor when it was my turn. The old lady tersely instructed me to "use basket" although my items were already on the counter, ready for purchase. The lack of courtesy continued. There was no greeting, no eye contact—just a stark, uncomfortable silence. The situation worsened when she questioned me about having a "bag," to which I replied that I had one in my car. This led to further interrogation about why I hadn't brought the bag in and the type of bag I had. She even called out an old man who seems like the other owner. The old man pointed to the sign and ask me “can you read it?”, and kept questioning me about my bag.I assured them that my bag complied with environmental guidelines, but the persistent questioning felt demeaning. The insistence on discussing the bag, despite my clear explanations, was perplexing and left me feeling discriminated against.I walked away feeling disrespected and saddened by this encounter. It is important for businesses to treat all customers equally and with respect. While I understand the necessity of adhering to environmental regulations, this should never be at the expense of courtesy and fair treatment.

Best store for Japanese food and groceries. The owners know how to take care of the fish. Their sushi-grade fish is outstanding.

The store is small, though not a lot of stuff, its very clean. However, I was greeted rudely by this owner. Don't know if he was not in the mood but at least that how I was treated and felt really uncomfortable.

All your favorite and hard to find Japanese ingredients and sauces in one place. I love shopping here.

This place is best for finding Japanese products. This is not a generic Asian mart and some items you might expect there might not ba available. (Having said that they have Thai fish sauce and bamboo shoot) you can also find sashimi grade fish here along with some Japanese fermented food. They also have snacks and japanese dessert. If you are in Shadyside you should check it out. I can only give four stars because the price is still a little bit pricey.

Conveniently located close to the Shadyside shopping area, this store carries both fresh produce and shelf life stable Japanese products! Fresh produce was neatly packaged and in the perfect amount that is suitable for either individuals or small families. When I was shopping on Walnut Street, a sudden craving for curry cubes struck me. To my delight, I stumbled upon this hidden gem that perfectly catered to my needs. It was like a harmonious melody to my ears! Whether you're a local resident or simply in the vicinity, I highly recommend exploring this exceptional store for all your Asian grocery shopping needs.

I simply adore this shop! It is run by an older (assumedly Japanese) couple. They have so many fun and yummy things straight from Japan!

A great local specialty market - the fresh food selection is small, and while I've seen the occasional sub-par produce, 95% of the time it is very fresh and well-priced. The meat is all frozen, but well-portioned for smaller meals and again, well-priced. The highlights are definitely the packaged foods and sauces/condiments, though - tons of niche items, and a huge variety of staple ingredients.

I have long been a patron of this place, even before the current people took over. The store carries the burden of the only Japanese grocery store in the city (owned and operated by Japanese people). The store is very small, so they can stock only basic items. If you're looking for anything special, you'll be out of luck. The prices are high if they've been imported from Japan. Produce quality is 3/5 stars; you should look carefully before purchasing.
