Despite the bright panels on the outside, Irma Freeman Center for the Imagination is in many ways a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of place. Even after having been past it on foot several times, I often had fairly little idea what it was. My first impression was that it might be a community center for disabled or destitute youths, and therefore somewhere that serves a valuable cultural function but in which I have no place. I was very incorrect in this assumption, as I found out later. One day, while the doors were open, I walked in. I was treated to a private, minimalistic indie gallery featuring work by local artists. At the time, the exhibit focused principally on abandoned sites in the Pittsburgh area, with photographs giving an eerie portrait of the region's history. It was as though the photographers were archaeologists documenting recent times that have fallen into obscurity and ruin. This is of course not the only exhibit: Irma Freeman's collections, ever changing, deal with a number of different artists and themes. Gift shop at the front door and opening night receptions every First Friday of the month. Strongly recommend!

I've always passed this place with lots of intrigue. From the outside, it looks like a magical place that is decorated with lots of beautiful mosaic tiling and mirror parts. I've always wanted to go inside although, it's always been closed- until now!! A friend and I were walking across the neighborhood and we saw that it was finally open! I learned that the Irma Freeman center is a community center that sometimes hosts classes such a yoga. It's also an art space. The art was amazing and very interesting. What I saw was contemporary art that was incredibly thought provoking. The two people that were in there were very pleasant to chat with and knowledgeable about the art work. They even encouraged us to come back on the first Friday next month. I loved everything I saw so much and I look forward to my next visit here.

Wonderful community center, gallery, and event center. I attended a poetry reading here, but they also host community events, classes, summer camps, and art exhibitions. The center is named after Irma Freeman, a painter born in Germany but later emigrated to the United States due to the increasing N*** threat. Her paintings are vibrant splashes of color and light that dazzle the viewer. Whether you attend a Yoga or art class here, it's an inviting and welcoming space that will expand your horizons and encourage your creativity.

Excellent space and atmosphere. It was my first time spinning the tembo Sounds show at an art gallery crawl and the staff were amazing.
