Large 2-story store with friendly staff to greet you.
If you are not a member, prepare to be talked to about the benefits of becoming a member and receive their special member signup paper to give them credit...
There is a special discount section in the back where members can save extra on "gently" used items. ...you could get some good deals back there...
There's a nifty fake rock to test out the shoes. (or have kids run and play on until they get yelled at so they stop risking their lives)
Overall fun store to walk around.
Not so fun for your wallet.

I am writing this review for REI as a whole but specifically for my customer service experience at the Pittsburgh (Southside) REI earlier this summer. I bought a Bote SUP (which I love, by the way) in June, and my buying experience was beyond any customer service dreams.
So many folks write reviews that are negative, but I believe in giving credit where credit is due and lifting folks up who exceed -- no, blow out of the water -- any expectations of the buying process.
This individual not only provided the best customer service I've ever experienced, but they talk about products casually yet so passionately, which makes you really want to come back and buy more cool stuff. I will forever be a customer of REI because of Rebecca, who mentioned she has been working almost 15 years at REI.
She should be part of the recruiting/hiring process and promoted because she definitely made me an REI lifer. Thank you so much for your excitement, passion and professionalism. In a world that feels overly corporate and transactional, you are an exemplary sales person made for the outdoor industry! Thank you!

Awesome store with the best employees. One of my favorite stores in the area. Members benefits are great. Get the credit card. It will lead to lots of free stuff!

One of the best REI stores in the country. Respectable selection of gear. DC is one of the only other locations with a more comprehensive selection.

The Lady that helped was nice. The rest of our experience was disappointing. No military discounts, nor do they take checks which IS legal tender we didn’t even get a bag to put our stuff In

I went into the store today with about 30 dollars on a REI gift card and some more money in my dividend money unsure about what I wanted to buy. A employee by the name Aedryss helped me figure out what to buy and confirmed before I purchased that I would have enough money between the 2 payment methods that the shorts would cost me under 10 dollars. This relieves stress I had and I am really excited with my purchase.

Very trendy outdoor/hiking shop. Pretty expensive but high quality merchandise. I usually shop elsewhere but had a very particular need.

Been going here since I moved to the city, always a great experience. The employees they are passionate about the products and the outdoors. A gentleman demoed us some solar powered lights then told me his boating haunts in the Allegheny Reservoir. Also, Marigrace is a HOOT has that place feeling like a sitcom.

This place is huge!!! And has so many things. What are you into? They got it. Biking. Hiking. Camping. Anything outdoors you could possibly need.
The prices are a bit much. But a lot of the products they sell are high quality. So it’s not asking toooo much.
There’s a sample section of a lot of food packets and things for your pets. Socks that help organizations. Just so many things everywhere.
Just a neat place to spend a couple hours to see some really neat products.

I visited the REI store in Southside Pittsburgh today seeking assistance with brakes for my son's electric bike. Initially hopeful, as I noticed they stocked bikes with the same brakes, I approached a technician for help. However, my experience quickly turned sour.
The technician, a blonde girl, displayed a dismissive attitude from the moment I mentioned it was an e-bike. Despite my polite request for assistance with brake pads, she abruptly refused to help, insisting that I contact the manufacturer instead. When I persisted and pointed out that they carried bikes with identical brakes, she remained unhelpful and even became confrontational.
It was evident that the brake pads needed replacing due to uneven wear, but she adamantly refused to acknowledge this or provide any guidance on adjusting the brakes. Her behavior was unprofessional and frankly unwelcoming. I left the store feeling frustrated and disheartened by the lack of customer service.
In light of this disappointing experience and the technician's poor attitude, I regret to say that I will not be returning to REI Southside Pittsburgh. It's a shame that one individual's demeanor can tarnish the reputation of an otherwise reputable establishment. I hope management takes steps to address customer service issues to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Came with an ancient osprey pack that needed a strap replaced. Rich and Dan and Marigrace spent as long as it took to fix my pack. They were helpful and funny and saved me no end of hassle. I’ve always had good experiences with the staff at REI but they definitely went above and beyond.

Disappointing that the Robinson location didn’t reopen (easier parking) but the employees here are extremely knowledgeable and always ready to help.
You’ll typically find deals by dropping by the store (that are not listed/available on the website). Standard shipping always arrives before the estimated date too, which is a plus.
