Heartbroken and embarrassed.
I have been going to Philip Pelusi salons for 12 years and have never had such a horrible experience.
I have been on a leave of absence from work but I had just enough money in my budget to get my hair cut so I called in. I explained my budget restrictions via phone and was assured that I could have my hair cut for $40 as the stylist I booked with was new.
This was much less than I was expecting so I arrived an hour early and asked for an estimate for just a few partial “skunk/y2k” highlights. She went back to speak to the stylist and said it would be $40 for 12 foils and that we could do that because there was additional time available on the books that day. This was still within my budget so I excitedly agreed.
The stylist I was booked with (1) was very nice but the woman assisting her (2) seemed irritated the entire time. Stylist (2) seemed very annoyed while I was explaining to her what I was looking for. I understand everyone has bad days so I tried not to take it personally. I explained that I wanted about 1-2 inches cut off, with layers, and straight bangs that came around the cheekbones to frame my face. My goal was a shaggy bob with highlights which I tried to explain the best I could. I also had reference pictures with me. I explained that I understood that I have very dark hair so I understood that my hair might not lift well so I didn’t mind how light they were able to get it as long as the style was right.
Stylist (2) handled my hair roughly in a way that could best be described as an angry parent hastily putting their daughters hair up for school after being told they missed the bus. Once the sections of hair were separated they started applying the foils and bleach. Stylist (1) placed everything gently but when she asked stylist (2) to double check her work things got bad again. The foils were pulled forward over my face (which was fine) but stylist (2) seemed to forget that my face was beneath the foils as she jammed the brush repeatedly into my face while she was packing more bleach onto the foils. Luckily I had my eyes closed because she was using enough force to squish my nose and eye.
After rinsing the bleach out I could tell something wasn’t right but I knew my hair was wet and still hadn’t been cut so I didn’t say anything. I thought it was a “trust the process moment”. Stylist (1) cut my hair and styled it. At this point I didn’t have my glasses on so I could not see. Once she was done she asked me to take a look and I had realized that everything was wrong. I didn’t have highlights, I had a full balayage which was not what I wanted at all, the length was wrong and she had not put any layers into my hair. She asked me what I thought and I politely asked for her to add layers like we discussed. She did a trim and asked again. I Reiterated that I wanted more of a shaggy alternative bob.
At this point she asked stylist (2) for help again. She told us to hang on as she was also preforming a haircut.
When she came over she roughly grabbed large chunks of my hair and cut quickly and all at once!!!
This was a technique I have never seen with any of the shag haircuts I have received. My heart sank as she yanked and cut. In the past my shag haircuts have been done with a more gentle and artistic approach so this was jarring to say the least. At this point I was basically frozen. I am very non-confrontational and she already seemed so annoyed so I just accepted that for $80 I was going to have to go home and fix it myself.
They finish up and I tell them I like it so I can get the heck out of there before it got past the point of saving. I walked up to the counter and looked down to see the total of $130 which was obviously much higher than discussed. Panicked, I asked what happened as this price was so different than what I had been told. All the woman could say is that the woman I spoke to was new and should h

This is for hair and makeup services at Philips Pelusi Fox Chapel. If I could, I would give them a BOLD, NEGATIVE 5 star review severallll times.
Terrible is the word. They do not have the right equipment or products to provide either of these services. The curlers are ancient and do not even heat the hair, the makeup quality is terrible. The boxes that were fished out to do my makeup looked they were purchased years ago from a garage sale. Makeup brushes were not washed. Talk about hygiene. For your face. Wowww.
The person who did my hair and makeup did spend time on my hair but with age old equipment what do you expect? I was supposed to get soft curls and this is how my hair looked as soon as I reached home and then 1 hour later for the photoshoot. NO CURLS, not even a hint of curls. Can you even believe a curling iron was used looking at the photos?
I had stressed repeatedly that I did not want to take any chances as it was my maternity shoot but the results were horrible. No consultation was provided prior to this, nothing offered even though I emailed, sent photos and requested one.
My makeup… that’s another story.. I could see the people in the salon, their own co-workers, looking at me a little taken aback as my face was being painted on. I knew it wouldn’t turn out good (chair was turned back to the mirror). When I got up to see the end result, I immediately fought back tears.
My makeup was like layers on a cake. THICK, several layered foundation that you could see all the strokes of. The powders used - setting powder, eyeshadows were all like dust sitting on my face. Again, with the quality of makeup products they use, the age-old makeup kits and dirty brushes what do they expect? And the neck was completelyyyyy ignored. That’s makeup basics 101. So while my face looked like Fizbo the clown, my neck was stark naked. Not even a touch of foundation. I came home and my husband just looked at me quietly. I immediately washed my face and ended up doing my makeup myself in the car on the way to the shoot.
That’s another thing. A 1 hour 45 appointment took 2 hour 15 mins making me rush to my shoot as I had to rush home, strip my face of all that they had put on. I don’t have any photos because I didn’t want to scar my future self with any mementos of the HORRIBLE makeup.
Also, my hairline was caked with the powder and foundation used. I didn’t have time to wash my hair and ended up having to use a new wet beauty blender to dab the products out.
If I could, I wouldn’t even let a person I don’t like get their makeup hair done here. This salon REALLYYY needs to upgrade the products and equipment they use and to stop promising they can provide any of these services. My 12 year old niece can do a better job of hair and makeup than them!

This place is pretty expensive and you don't get the care you would at Isle of You or maybe another boutique salon. It's a lot of selling you to come back and the cut itself is similar to a cut at Great Clips.

I should’ve left this a long time ago. I have fine hair and never in my life could find a place (chain, small) that could cut my hair and leave it feeling fresh and feeling like it had volume, until I went here a few years ago. Every single stylist has skill and training. From start to finish that interact with you to get you exactly what you want. Will always go back!

I had been growing my hair out for a year and looked forward to getting the cut I wanted with my hair being long enough. My previous stylist (a gem I found at Supercuts) was no longer there, though, so i decided to go somewhere "nice". I remembered Philip Pelusi from when they were at Pittsburgh Mills so I figured I'd go there again! The hair stylist I initially had when I came for my appointment here was at a lower rate and didn't seem very confident/experienced. I was coming for a layered and textured V cut. I was given a mirror to see the back of my hair three times during my appointment with her and each time i looked back, I saw flat hair with a weak u at best. If my appointment had stopped there and that's all my experience here was, this would be a slightly different review (maybe 3 stars?)But....another hairdresser (Katrina!) intervened. She seemed to see a struggle and see that things weren't really adding up. I feel like she knew I was trying to keep length so, in trying to figure out the best course of action, she had me stand and turn a bit so she could see where my hair sat and what could be done. At this point, I had been ready to cry because my hair was NOT right at all. I did start tearing up and barely got out some assertion after she was starting to fix things, saying I don't mind if some of my hair needs to be shorter for me to get some good layers and texture in my hair. This woman was able to take that and work with it. She immediately started getting some layers into my hair and fixing some of the problem.I'm always pretty meek at hair appointments, even with a comfortable and confident stylist doing my hair. There are several hair appointments I have left just planning to deal with it, grow it out and try someone else next time. I couldn't speak up with the stylist I started off with because I was already starting to sense she was a little inexperienced and uncertain and didn't want to break her, so to speak. I definitely didn't want to confuse her and lose all my hair in that appointment either. With Katrina, though, I felt comfortable saying something. Though I was too emotional to say more of what I should have, what I said made a difference. Anything good that came from that appointment was because of Katrina. My hair has layers and some texture. The V cut is not as defined as I'd like, but that's on me for being ready to bawl my face off and just...wanting to leave, ha.I know I still wasn't totally happy with my hair and wanted to cry whenever I thought about it so, instead of just going somewhere else, I decided to call the salon and find out who the intervening stylist was. We talked on the phone for a good bit about how I was feeling and what I wanted to do. We talked about the initial stylist I had and whatnot. I, then, made an appointment to fix my hair and was just, approached with so much compassion and understanding. 5 stars!*I want to make this very clear....My intial stylist was Rhianna. While, yes, she seemed kind of inexperienced and maybe lacking in confidence at points, it's not all on her. I could have spoken up more. I could have brought the pictures I had lined up for my appointment. There are a lot of things I could have done that might have avoided all of this which is why my appointment with her alone wouldn't be getting some crazy angry review. She was excited to cut my hair and had great energy. She was so so kind and great to talk to and, when I was clearly emotional, she was graceful to the very end and handled herself well. While I enjoyed her as a person, I just don't believe she was the right stylist for me. She may be the right stylist for someone else and, with the passion she has for cutting hair, she deserves to find her people and further her experience. If you are looking for a stylist who cares about what she's doing and wants your hair to be healthy, she is worth trying. If you have pictures to back you up, I recommend bringing them, absolutely. Please don't allow me to

I wanted a haircut before the holidays and my usual stylist in Shadyside is not available. This salon gave me a same day appointment and may be this is why it is available.I have short hair and had a haircut with Rheanna. I only need the lower part of the back cleaned, but she cut the upper part as well and it is uneven. I have an almost bald patch in the back. Doesn't know how to do soft layers. If you have short hair, ask for someone else. Will get my usual stylist to fix the haircut next week.

Huge shout out to Maureen. Four weeks ago, she fixed a cut that I’d received elsewhere. Yesterday she colored my hair & shaped my hair to the cut she knows I want and waxed my brows. I couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend Maureen.Services: Hairstyling
