Be sure to pay your respects to Mr. Pickles while you're there

A very well stocked used-book store that appears to allow trades. The aisles are very narrow and it may be difficult to navigate if you're using mobility aides or for some plus-sized folk. The cat is super friendly, as well as the staff

This place is amazing, although it can also be overwhelming. Stacks and stacks of books as far as the eye can see. Great deals on used and like-new books.

The book trader is a magical place! Absolutely what I think of when younread about the half-mystical shop with dimensional doorways around each corner. The Book Trade even comes complete with a large orange cat-in-charge named Mr Pickles, so full points for management and atmosphere.

Overwhelming store. Boxes everywhere, hard to walk. Mostly old books, not currently relevant. Difficult to navigate or find what you want. Poor lighting, hard to read spines. Small children's/young adult section. When we went it smelled bad, but I don't know if that's normal. Location is wonderful, in the heart of the touristy part of Philly. Expected better from a store so well-situated to be a hip spot.

I personally love this book store, with some warnings. First, the good:*There are SO MANY BOOKS. You'll feel like you're walking into book Narnia. Shelves are packed, boxes are strewn around and sometimes there's just a stack or two of volumes up to your knees. If you like searching for treasures in a store, this is your happy place.*You can trade in your used books for store credit.*Employees are friendly, but don't hover.*Prices are reasonable - not rock bottom, which I see some reviewers complaining about. Newer books and rarer books both carry a higher price tag - but this *is* a bookstore, not a thrift shop, after all. Now, the main reason I took a star off:*Maneuverability in this store SUCKS, and that's for me as a pretty able bodied person. If you are disabled, you may not be able to browse easily, or at all. Stairs required to get to the second floor, which is where the fiction is among other things. This store has been in this spot for a long time, and I don't anticipate that issue is going to be solved anytime soon.Less seriously, there is a store cat, but I didn't see it last time I was there, and my heart was broken.

This is quintessential Philly: old-school cool, inviting, no-frills, and has a residential cat (Dr. Pickles). Their two floors are stacked floor to ceiling with books, vinyls, and dvds to the point where you may feel a bit claustrophobic. If you're looking to hunker down with a book, you can find a few stools and chairs scattered throughout the place. They have an excellent variety of inventory, and I always manage to find a neat book (or three). If you're looking for a deal, there's a couple $2 book bargain shelves, and most of the books I've checked are in the $5-9 range. However, one thing that caught my attention was the pricing of a couple books, where the written price was marked higher than the original retailer price. Pro tip: be sure to catch a glimpse of Dr. Pickles! He's often on the second floor by the windows.

My second home, call me the librarian while you're here :) This is a landmark almost of a book store. Makes Olde City feel complete. While you have every other kinds of store in town, this is a book store that rivals barns and noble. Pretty much has everything youre looking for and CDs, DVDs. Huge section of nonfiction on the first floor and fiction on the second floor. Generally well organized in their respective categories, the prices range from $4.95 to $12.95. The condition of the books are overall used but surprisingly there are new ones as well. I'm a BOTM collector, and they're hardbacks that have been let go by the subscriber, pretty much new when you find one. The fun part is browsing through these tight aisles. Reminds me of walking through Harry Potter's library. Very vintage. Go ahead, have a photo shoot here, youre probably not the first.

Amazing place for used books, magazines, records, cds, dvds, etc! They even have a bookstore cat. My only complaint is that the books aren’t really organized by anything other than genre, so if you’re looking for a specific title or author, prepare to spend some time there to skim every title on the shelf. I drive to Philly once or twice a year just to go here, carve out an hour or two of your day and you won’t be disappointed!
