I love Philadelphia and am proud to be from here. But I have never encountered anyone as rude as the salesperson at this store in my life. While the store was supposed to be open for business, the door was locked and I had to wait outside for the salesperson to even acknowledge me, much less to open the door. He finally came to the door fully masked and cracked the door open leaving only enough room to toss a mask at me before he would even consider letting me in. Needless to say, I walked away. The issue wasn't the mask, the issue was his rudeness. How is this place even in business? Don't waste your time - so many other great stores in the area -even right across the street. This place sucks.

I was surprised to see so many negative reviews because I had a pleasant shopping experience here and look forward to returning and exploring more of their fashions…As far as masks, I don’t mind at all, it’s about public health and safety… I didn’t have one with me and the staff person approached the door with a kind word and mask in hand. It didn’t interfere with my shopping experience at all…The volume of clothes and varied styles are wonderful… I complimented the buyer…I gave 4 out of 5 stars because of the prices… Some of the clothes are reasonably priced and some were high… it depends on your budget… All in all, a worthwhile place to visit and I recommend it…

A lot of people who lack common decency leave negative reviews of this shop - but as a frequent customer I LOVE this shop. It has amazing unique items, great customer service, and all my friends love to come with. A lot of folks leaving negative reviews hate masking and respecting people’s needs, I’d ignore them. If you’re not masked, he offers one politely. Great shop.

Traumatized! I’m sorry sir for BANGING on your door but your sign says “open, please knock.” Instead of a microscopic BRB note, take down the open sign and replace it with BRB and you won’t have people inconveniencing you.

The guy that runs this story is the whackiest banana I’ve ever come in contact with. Consistent with every negative review on here. Some people SHOULD NOT own small businesses, this guy is one of them. He does not know how to appropriately speak to others. We went to the store and had such a negative interaction, I have never been spoken to in this manner in my entire life- something is very off with this guy… beware.

I stopped in while strolling in Old City the other day. When I asked the owner/salesperson, out of friendly curiosity, how long the store had been there, he asked me if I lived in Philly then launched into a rant about how unthinkable it was that I didn't know it was there. Then I overheard him explaining to another customer about how cell phones and uber are why world is going to hell. I love little neighborhood boutiques, but the vibe in there is very unpleasant, and I won't be going back.

I can echo a lot of the one star reviews for this store, which is unfortunate given the location and excitement I initially had for shopping at an independent business. I'm a sales director and have worked in retail in the past and I felt that my entire experience at this shop was a masterclass in how not to run a small business in what can only be a spot with an incredibly high rent.I knocked, as indicated by the sign on the door and was greeted by the masked shop owner. Since I didn't have a mask but wanted to respect the owner's right to requiring them, I asked if I could use one of the paper masks I saw displayed at the cash register. The shop owner seemed peeved by my request, but being the only person in my party and at that point the only passerby who wanted to browse and possibly shop at the store, he relented and handed me a mask. He proceeded to ask if I was "just browsing" or if I was shopping. Perplexed by this question, given that it was my first time at this shop, I answered nervously. I felt very uncomfortable by his close observance while shopping, especially as a woman shopping alone, which was not in a helpful manner like most sales associates who are interested in trying to help you find something that you may want or need. I felt like I couldn't look at any of the folded items, and when I finally mustered the courage to do so, I spent time refolding the shirt I grabbed to avoid any commentary about being messy.None of the clothing was particularly exciting or unique and was overpriced for the quality. It's fast fashion at best disguised as unique finds given the exclusive nature of the shop layout and the rules associated with shopping there. While I was in the fitting room, I heard an altercation at the front door when two women attempted to walk in behind a gentleman who had been let in the same way I was. They had missed the sign with the rules for knocking because the door was ajar. The shop owner immediately launched at them and accused them of trying to sneak in. They were so alarmed by his reaction that they asked him not to be so rude an accusatory (with not kind language, mind you). He screamed back at them with the same use of rude language.I immediately rehung the clothes I was trying on (as neatly as possible) and left. I'll never go back. Such a shame.

The person working was the rudest retailer I have ever encountered. It was a cold and windy evening. After about 10 minutes of looking around we made our way to back to the front of the store and we both saw pants we were considering buying. I asked the retailer if the medium size was a similar to a 6/8 or 8/10. He said, “You’ll have to try them on.” I commented that I didn’t feel like trying them on due to all there layers of clothes I had to deal with. He launched into a rant about how I was insulting him, asking if I know how difficult it is to run a shop. I said “You don’t seem happy having a shop.” He then got really mad, said sarcastically “Thanks for assuming I’d be happy.” He then went to the door, unlocked it, and told us to get out. I have never been asked to leave any establishment of any kind-ever. When we got outside, he locked the door and made the “crazy sign” rotating his forefinger at his temple. It appears that many other people have had similar negative experiences with this same angry man.

My partner and I love supporting local businesses and Sugar Cube was a go to for years. We have tried to return twice since the pandemic ended but the shop continues to feel the need for locked doors and mask wearing by guests. The man that owns this shop has locked out the entire world including repeat customers. Today we attempted to return and were surprised by this continued requirement. Upon walking back down the street we encountered a confused patron attempting to open the door to his shop. We told her of the mask requirement and we three walked away. This masked owner came dashing out the door to yell at us, of course with his mask on. What a sad sad human. It's unfortunate that we will have to look elsewhere for clothing. Hey buddy, the internet won over your germaphobe idealisms.

Awesome shop in old city. Everything is unique and items you won’t find at any other store. Every time I go I discover a new brand I wish I had known about before. They’re not pushy, never make you feel rushed and genuinely care about finding the right items for you.Negative reviews are silly. Just wear a mask and be kind — it’s that simple.

Best local clothing store in Philly. The owner is very knowledgeable and helpful, almost like a personal shopper! They do require masks as of this writing FYI

It was around early summer of 2022,we were about to walk in to this store and the door was locked. A older man ( I wouldn’t call him a gentleman) walked to the door. We were putting our masks on as it stated on the sign. He overheard my husband said something to me that had nothing to do with the mask wearing and he got so perturbed and he shut and locked the door, gave us a glaring look and didn’t let us in! We didn’t understand that absolutely rude behavior and just plain unacceptable for a business! Needless to say, they lost another customer. No stars for this business as far as I am concerned!

It's a nice store, but the door is always locked and you need a mask. There is a sign on the door of where to go and purchase a mask, so the store won't give you a mask. I just don't understand??? I don't wear a mask anywhere???? COVID is still around, but the government doesn't have a mask mandate. The woman who owns it is nice, the guy is a little crazy. They lost me as a customer.
