The nutrition pharmacy for individuals with special needs to be healthy. They provided 3,700 Thanksgiving dinners for families last Thursday. I volunteer two days a week packing meals for people. Always in need of volunteers. Contact office or check out the web site. Give it a try. You'll love the opportunity to help others.

I first learned about MANNA's mission through my students who volunteer here. I'm writing about my volunteer experiences from volunteering 3 times so far--once at the old location a few years ago, and twice at this new location at 20th & Hamilton. Normally you'd have to sign up for a orientation before you can schedule volunteer shifts, but for a period of time during the COVID-19 quarantine they waived the requirement so a lot of first time volunteers were able to sign up. About my "kitchen meal prep" volunteer experience during COVID-19: I took the day off and came by myself, but I really enjoyed packaging/labeling meals with the other volunteers. It was really interesting to see the diversity in our life stages and age ranges, occupations, etc. Many of us found a lot more in common than we thought, and I was very surprised that some of the volunteers had just moved to Philly and were looking for an opportunity to help during the quarantine (and it sounds like this was one of the few places they saw that still allow volunteers)! As someone who works with college students who want to go to medical and health professions schools, I really appreciate the mission of MANNA to serve those with life-threatening illnesses and are referred by health professionals to receive meals from MANNA due to their acute nutritional risk. There's a lot of coordination that happens behind the scenes, but thankfully they make it really easy for volunteers like me to help. During our 3-hour shift we helped package 1,475 nutritious meals! During the quarantine the Philadelphia Parking Authority isn't ticketing so coming into the city and parking was pretty easy. You'll have to sign in at the computers and there's lockers for you to place your belongings (you'll set whatever you want the code to be) in the kitchen area. See my photo for their safety rules, and during the quarantine they're limiting how many people can sign up for a volunteer shift and the hours that you can sign up for shifts (during the day Monday-Friday only). In addition to the aprons and gloves we normally wear, we also all wore face masks and maintained social distancing by standing 6 feet apart. In some of my other photos I documented volunteering during Pie in the Sky, their annual pie fundraiser leading up to Thanksgiving! Come volunteer with a willingness to help the MANNA staff with whatever they need that day and get to know your fellow volunteers, you just might leave with a new friend!
