Whenever I decide to purchase African-American children's books I go to Hakims Bookstore in West Phlly which has a extensive collection of books, cultural gifts, calendars, greeting cards and more. I recently purchased several books for my friend's 3 year old daughter who was celebrating her birthday. The owner offered many suggestions when she realized my interest in purchasing age appropriate books ...Hakim's bookstore is a great community treasure which I encourage everyone to support.

Great customer service and on time delivery....the fact that they are staying on course with servicing the community is telling...I kept looking for books that were completely overpriced elsewhere.....wish I coul buy all my books from here.

This is one of the prime examples of why independent brick-and-mortar bookstores are so important. Booksellers can curate something really special that can't be replicated by going on Amazon or walking into a corporate superstore. Hakim's is a great example of this. Hakim's has hands down THE BEST children's book section for Black children. They had so many children's books that I'd never even seen, along with the classics. It actually made me a little emotional to see how many wonderful books are now available for Black kids -- I wish we'd had these when I was a child. If you have a Black or brown child (or know a Black or brown child) you need to go to Hakims.

Hakim's Bookstore was a great experience. I fell into the atmosphere between the music and the collection of books that were alot different than what we usually see. I was very happy to see the children's books on which Black children could see themselves in. There were more than just books, but I surely bought literally a box full of books. It will take me some time, but once I'm through with my current grab I will be back for more! The staff is very friendly and we had conversations about a few topics including the community outreach and how they are the oldest Black owned bookshop in the area, I find that a pretty good find being that I randomly decided to go there.

I was welcomed with opened arms as I walked in for the first time. Great selection of books, and they can order books for you. Great mix of radical books to children books. Truly a gem in West Philly.Oldest book store in Philly with the nicest vibes!

Look no further - this family owned business is incredible and will help you find the perfect books/gifts for any occasion!! I have shopped here for years, both in person and virtually.Not only do Yvonne and her family provide phenomenal customer service, they are also providing customers with a piece of history - not many can say that they shop at the first and oldest African-American bookstore in Philadelphia and on the East Coast!! I highly recommend Hakim’s Book Store and Gift Shop - it will not disappoint!!

This is one of my favorite places to visit in Philadelphia. It's a beautiful bookstore with wonderful staff and a great atmosphere and energy. I brought friends with me and they were so excited with the selection of books. We plan to return to do some christmas shopping here!
