Haven't been on the tour but I maintain the property here and the arboretum is very cool. Come in the spring/early summer to see some cool trees.

This was a truly awesome tour. It was especially neat to have our tour guide, Doug, appear in the film that we saw before going on the tour. However, it was even better that Doug was an awesome tour guide and he really knew his stuff. We learned so much and both of us thought it was the best tour we have been on. It was really cool to learn about a period of history and a man that most take for granted. Thank you for a great tour! (11 am, June 18)

I enjoyed this tour very much. It starts with a movie presentation at the beginning of the tour that gives you information on President Buchanan's life. After the movie you walk to the house where we were greeted by Douglas our tour guide who was dressed up in the clothing of that time. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. The tour was very well done and wasn't rushed. I highly recommend!

A very interesting display of a residence of the 15th US President.
The tour of the house was impressive, and our guide did a good job explaining many events and people in detail. The film shown at the beginning of the tour did a good job summarizing Buchanan life and the atmosphere of the country at that time. It demonstrates how inept this president was, without casting judgment.
The house has many original pieces of furniture and paintings throughout.
The ground is quite nice. The building is well-maintained. The staff was friendly and helpful.
If Buchanan were rated higher as a president, this place would be a big hit. Regardless, it still is a good place to visit in Lancaster.

Buchanan was an interesting president. To think that he was the only PA president is interesting. This Museum has so many original items. Very worthwhile.

The grounds are beautiful, the museum was very informative, and the house was very well maintained. The tour of the house was magnificent and very informative. They made it very kid friendly. My kids have already asked to go back. I look forward to going back.

This was my first visit to Wheatland. Bearing in mind that this is not a National Historic Site, the estate and grounds are kept in very good condition and the staff was knowledgeable and helpful. I was able to secure the last remaining ticket for the day. As a result it was a two-hour wait for the last tour of the day. I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance.

The 20 minute film shown prior to the tour gave context to both Buchanan’s presidency and Wheatland itself.
I dreaded the fact that I was the only one on the 3 o’clock tour. The docents, however, made me feel welcome. Gerry, who has been leading tours for 10 years insisted on giving me the full tour. Gerry had an extensive knowledge of the house, its furnishings, along with the entire Buchanan family.
Plan on spending 3 hours here if you want to see everything.

1/3 of this movie was about James Buchanan’s sexuality, which was a total cringe moment with a 7 and 9 year old in tow. Our whole family gathered to visit this home and while we loved the tour and tour guide, the movie was really not enjoyable and really not appropriate. Not only did it discuss his sexuality preference but it really spoke of all of his downfalls and not a whole lot surrounding the house, and the people that lived there. They could have focused more on Harriet Lane who honestly was a very important part of history!

The tour begins at the Lancaster Historical Society off Presidents Street. Visitors watch a fifteen minute video about President Buchanan and then proceed to Wheatland House for a guided tour. This is very informative and most of the furniture and artifacts belonged to President Buchanan or his niece Hariet. It is a beautiful home that is well preserved dating from 1828.
