I have never encountered the level of incompetence I witnessed at this hospital. I watched a child convulsing in the waiting room. People everywhere in hallways. Some in chairs. Some on beds. My daughter was here for over 8 hours in a chair in the waiting room. How can you leave people sitting in chairs for 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 hours with no food or water? How is that legal? The staff are rude. I watched a nurse slam the door in a parent's face when they tried demanding someone see their child. This is absolutely abhorrent disgusting behavior. I can't believe this place is allowed to operate.

If I could give this hospital minus zero stars I would! I'm calling Pittsburgh in the morning to file a complaint! My 87 year old VETERAN Father-in-law was sent by AMBULANCE from the VA by a surgeon for a STAT MRI for a possible aneurysm and a pinpoint pupil of his right eye. We not only NEVER saw the inside of an ER exam room but was made to sit in the waiting room for a total of 9hrs! When asked what was the hold up because the other patients who came in after us were being taken to MRI, I was told to call the MRI department myself! I didn't know I worked there? Which I did 3 times only to be told it would be another hour each time! I got a number for administration from the greeter and called them. Another 2 hours later he was taken to MRI, only spoken two words to and left to sit yet again! When called into the ER HALLWAY (HIPPA) for results the DR was asked if the MRI was done with contrast to which she assured us it was...it was NOT! It was a total crap show from the time we walked in the door until we were discharged! If this is how you treat your Veterans let alone an elderly Veteran you should hang your heads in shame! I am beyond disgusted with this place and these people! You should be embarrassed!

Tried to see my sister in-law today in Medical ICU in Altoona. I did not have my ID with me, I was told I would have to take a number then they would have to get security too fingerprint me and run me thru the system to see if I was who I said I was. She has been in ICU for 20 days I would have liked to see her before they transferred her to a different facility. I could have waited for them to do all of this and been ok, but why do you have to do this she is not a prisoner and I am not a employee. I feel for the patient's!

It was my first time in the emergency room UPMC Altoona PA located on 620 Howard Ave 16601. My experience there was absolutely horrifying and disgusting. While I was there in the er, I was accompanying my family. I was then approached by this woman named Betty. Who I assumed worked in registration. I was told to leave the premises because supposedly there was only 1 person allowed to stay with the patient being seen. At which I left to my vehicle and waited patiently for my wife to call me. I was notified by my wife that a family of 5 had been in there since I had left. I waited more time and had to use the restroom. Therefore I then decided, to go back inside and use the restroom and check on the status on my mother-in-law. Which checking on the status I met a couple who politely asked me to watch their paperwork because there was a man standing by check-in about to collapse to the floor. To where the woman then grabbed the chair, so the man can sit. Then here comes Ms.Betty calling for the husband of the woman that helped that elderly man. After Ms. Betty speaks to this kind man and cuts him off to address me stating "why are you here I told you to leave you are not allowed here". At this time I addressed her stating "There is a family of 5 that had not been told the same thing as me. Being the only colored person in there at the time I found this very suspicious. Ms.Betty proceeded to call security, which then the couple had notified that I came in to use the restroom and check on my family. Therefore it very unprofessional that Ms.Betty had racially profiled me, I say this not to be ignorant but when I was addressed I was the only African American sitting in the waiting area, when noone else was addressed besides me. However, I did not disrespect Betty in anyway, who was yelling at me and the other couple to get me out the waiting area. "FYI" beware of Betty located in the er, who is a disgusting, racist individual.

Stay. Away. I would take my mother to a veterinarian for treatment before I would ever have her go back to this hospital. Ten plus days - no shower, not taken out of bed at all. Given shots without first wiping the area with an alcohol pad. No call from a doctor even though several requests were made. Case worker never answered her phone. When we finally got her on the phone to talk about transferring my mother, she straight up lied to the nursing facility. If you've ever had a bad experience here, please go to the JHCO website and file a report - apps.jointcommission.org…

My wife found out she was pregnant in November 2022 and we had to be seen soon due to previous complications. We had to go to a different upmc clinic in Huntington because there were no open spots which was fine. We were there for a few weeks and everything seemed normal at first. Then at what should have been 8 weeks she started to have issues. We couldn't see the baby where it should have been and that made us panic. On the phone they told us that we were still early and that we were at 5 weeks and 6 days. So they may have misdated. But then the same day in person they asked us what we were thinking about planning wise for the eventual miscarriage. Blood tests came back as they never took an hcg test the first time and we had to go again. Then we saw her levels decline. They have not been helpful whatsoever. We had to go to the hospital last night because she was bleeding and needed a shot and it took 6 hours just to get through and go home. All they did was an ultrasound, blood tests, and gave us the shot and we had to wait so long in between. When going to a closer clinic for one of the blood tests we had to go to the hospital because they were closed. They keep talking down to us asking if we understand that UPMC is all one company and they all work together even though they don't know when each building is open or closed, how to cohesively communicate about patient details and keep information from changing. We still don't know much. We don't know if there was a preventable issue that caused the miscarriage because they only tests hcg. This hospital is set up in a way that makes no sense for the patient and probably is hard on the staff. What a disgrace

We came in Saturday evening for my daughter, she was unresponsive (passed out). It is now Monday morning and we are still here. They have been trying to get a room for her since Saturday. Communication has been terrible, it went over 20 plus hours till they got a tray of food for her, it's Monday and no one has administered her meds for her (she's on blood thinner). They run a test, wait for hours to get a result from the doctor, decide to run another test, wait hours for that test, wait hours to get the result, repeat. Keep saying oh we will discharge and then go in a different direction running more tests. What a joke. This ER is swamped with people in the halls. My daughter is stable and she should have been referred to specialists and her primary care to finish looking for a reason for this

Everyone's stories don't add up from the day we stepped in here.Er had my husband gaining 20lbs in one week and then he couldn't even walk in here.Well neither one of those were true.We came a little after 5 p.m. and finally got into a room after 3 AM. Then once he got into his room one person would say one thing and another person would say something else.Even most of the drs. weren't communicating very well. One day we are doing something and turn around they say something very different. We called the upper people and that to was a joke.No one communicates very well. This place use to be at the top of my list but now I feel they are at the bottom

Right now, my 94 year old father, Thomas, is on UPMC Altoona, surgical floor, Tower 11, Room 1116B receiving life-threateningly inferior care. On Monday, Thomas suffered a trochanteric hip fracture. Best trochanteric hip fracture outcomes are associated with immediate surgery. At UPMC, there was "no available operating room" until Wednesday evening. When Thomas returned from surgery, my mother and I were surprised to see my father was not wearing an intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) device and that later in the day, he was not given and taught to use an incentive spirometer. Wednesday evening, I requested that he would receive an incentive spirometer and taught to use it before he went to sleep. When I arrived Thursday, Thomas had still not been given an incentive spirometer. He had, however, been given an oxygen nasal cannula because sometime in the night his oxygen level went to 82. Fortunately, they determined he did not, at that time have pneumonia or an embolism. Oxygen is new. He had no oxygen cannula post-surgery Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday. Thursday, he required oxygen. While I was with him today, I emphasized again his need for an incentive spirometer. It took some hours, but eventually a respiratory therapist rushed into the room with one, hastily removed it from its bag, and gave him a perfunctory, rapid-fire little rote statement on how to use it. He "kind of" got it, but not well enough for her to turn on her heel and leave. I called after her"I think he needs more instruction." Over her shoulder, she replied, "I'll be back in an hour." She did not return in an hour or at all while my mother and I were there. While trying to arrange her husband's disheveled rag-pile of a hospital my mother ran onto his Treatment Plan, tangled up in a blanket, lying on the floor, behind the bed. From it, we learned that he should have been wearing an intermittent pneumatic compression device since post-surgery on Monday. My mother asked Nurse Alexis why he hadn't been given them. Her reply "Oh we have them, They're right over there. I can put them on if he wants. It's just that some people say they are too hot in them." These prevent formation of clots in post-surgical patients, especially ones who are going to sedentary for some time. "Too hot," indeed. My father has not been offered a pan of warm water, some soap and a wash cloth since arriving in the emergency room. He has not been given the opportunity to brush his teeth or comb his hair. He is often at the bottom of the bed, with his feet jammed against the footboard. He is able to pull himself up with his hand on the grab bars and has done so several times. Today we requested he be repositioned in his bed. The nurses who eventually did this, told him to cross his arms on his chest while they lifted him then plopped him as though he were a side of beef and with his head touching the headboard. We want him to use his upper body strength. We do not want him to feel he is being treated like an invalid. Everyone thinks their loved one is special. We are no exceptions. In significant ways, Thomas IS special. Because he is so health conscious, he frequently requests various medical work-ups. His cardio-vascular system functions as in a much younger man. His pulmonary health is the same. Yes, he has severe lower body arthritis and he developed osteoporosis because who thinks of a Dexa Scan for a man. Clearly not his physicians. On top of that, he has been forced to take prednisone for the past year after being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. The day his hip broke, he had done what he does every week: drove his tractor to mo two acres if beautifully kept lawn. He drives a car. We recently insisted he have his eyes and his reflexes evaluated to see if he ought to be driving a car. He passed with flying colors. I say all of this because we don't want him to lose the gifts of health he has because he is being treated like a hopeless geriatric wreck there on the 11th floor. He needs

UPMC Altoona, surgical floor, Tower 11, provided the worst care to post-surgical patients. Day 3, no one had asked patient if they wanted to brush their teeth, offered them a basin to wash up, etc. PT provided 1=3 minutes of therapy to back surgery patient per day, seriously? Pt's were over medicated post-op, staff seemed to push narcotics, rather than providing less sedating means of pain relief, re-position, walking, etc. 3rd shift male aide chastised patient for urinating on floor, however, over 20 minutes went by before help arrived to assist patient to bathroom. The way he spoke to patient, should have fired on the spot. Sad to say, UPMC Altoona worst hospital ever for patient care.
